One step forward – two steps back. I just posted about my success in getting the reading log time shortened: http://www.lamomsblog.com/2009/09/homework-success.html,
but then I went to Back to School Night and found out that book reports will be given in “project” form, including the dreaded diorama. ARGH!

Oh..April…my day comes next week..I’m dreading curriculum night. I have strong feelings about dioramas. Total waste of time.

I read your blog entry too…and I think it’s sad that education has become such a contentious issue in our lives. It’s supposed to be easy. It can be very easy, without all the yelling. I yelled last year. I’m not doing it this year. I have a limited time with my child and there are enough things to get after her about without adding homework to the mix. My job is to teach her to pick up after herself, to help set the table, to be kind to her aged grandmother, to speak to me respectfully….etc.
You’re not being a bad, uninvolved parent if you refuse to do the school’s bidding.

How would the teacher feel if all the parents brought their children to her/his house for an hour (or two) on Saturday to do the diorama’s?

It’s school work….it belongs at school.

Dioramas (Diorami?) You’re serious? How is a diorama related to schoolwork in any form?

My daughter’s teacher last year said that “some kids” (which usually means one kids mom) created a diorama of their Presidential Project (don’t get me started on that) but I thought she was kidding? But then some moms do have way too much time on their hands.

I know…whoever thought dioramas were a crucial part of elementary school must have had another intention in mind (that has gotten lost over the millenia), because I have such a hard time seeing what they are good for….that’s the reason they are banned in my house. We did one once, or rather I did one once, and that was the last time.

I recently listened to the podcast of Voices in the Family. I listened to it with my 13 year old daughter and we had an interesting discussion. She only spends about a half hour per night on homework, but pointed out that some kids in her class spend two hours trying to complete their math homework. Her point was that not all kids work at the same pace. One night she had a word search as homework and our family agreed that it was a poor choice for homework and we completed it together as a family. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I don’t remember having any homework until 4th grade and by then I was excited and proudly stated that “I had homework!” I don’t agree that all homework is pointless. I think that at the high school level there needs to be some out of class assignments, but at the elementary level I believe that kids need to have time to play. Playing in so underestimated in its value, as is recess. Our public school is very traditional and it would be very unlikely in this “no child left behind” era ( did I mention that I don’t like no child left behind) that I could have an impact, but I have voiced my opinion about teaching to the test. I frequently tell my kids that learning is about acquiring knowledge and being interested in the world around you and not about the test. Real life is not about a test, but at 9yrs,11yrs,13yrs, and 15yrs. They have a limited interest in what mom’s talking about.

Children who understand the work or are brighter will finish the work quickly. Children who are not, are forced to sit for hours trying to work through, getting stressed and frustrated. Many times it will lower their self-esteem and they will begin to think they are “dumb”. We should not be grouping kids into the same group when giving homework. I dont think we should give it at all, because we dont want to give some children more and others less.

i personally believe that homework is an outlet for things teachers don’t teach in school that they should have done. if someone truly could taught well in school, then there would be no need for homework as it would already be learned. as an addition, with this seperation of the two lessons, school has become “unchallenging” and should actually be harder. i spend 8 hours a day in school, and now i have to spend my break time at home doing something i should have been taught in the first place.

My mom is currently in the hospital and I didn’t leave the hospital until 8.
I’ve been doing homework for 4 hours.
    I’m still not done.
I could be at the hospital with my mom right now, except I don’t have the tools to do the homework there.

Obviously, homework cuts into our time and our lives.
    It should be banned.

    I hate it.

Ironically, I’m doing a huge project on the positives and negatives of homework. This investigation began almost on day one of junior year and will probably end around the last few weeks of school. I honestly don’t see how this is beneficial to my education (although reading up on everyone’s anti-homework views has given me a few good ideas) and it is a massive time-suck, for lack of better words. This project takes me hours every week, adding to the other hours of homework piled on by my other teachers, who don’t seem to take into consideration that I have other classes to tend to, not to mention my after-school family life. I don’t think that homework should be quit absolutely cold-turkey though; sometimes a little math review or history brush up is a good thing. However, since elementary school, most of my homework has been “busy work”: writing ten page outlines, creating Jeopardy powerpoints that count for 20% of my grade, even making up video skits (which were, by no means, allowed to be done at school). I’m exhausted everyday and I hardly ever see or talk to my family on most weeknights. I’m up until midnight only to wake up at five in the morning to repeat yesterday. It’s stressful for my parents, it’s frustrating for me, it’s a never-ending vicious cycle. I’m just hoping if I speak out now, my kids won’t have to deal with this, and neither will I. Stop homework! (I say as I procrastinate the project aforementioned)

    Hi Kate,

You’re very articulate and I’d love to see your final project. Please send it to me.

Have you considered, in doing your project, keeping track of everything you do every evening. How about describing your homework and what, if anything you learn from it. How about calling a few experts and see what they think of your assignments. (Chapter 6 of The Case Against Homework, titled Homework Deconstructed, explains what’s the matter with most assignments.) From what you describe, you’re right that your homework is busy work. It’s time that those who tout the benefits of homework (e.g., Harris Cooper) explain exactly what a student learns from the kind of work you describe and why your precious time should be spent like that.

I would love to share my project with you, but so far, it’s rather unimpressive, consisting of facts written on at least 30 note cards, flashy PowerPoints, and short blurbs on the tone and diction of “The Case Against Homework”. However, if I do end up writing a paper on the negatives of homework, I will be sure to send it to you. In the mean time, I have to go find 15 more facts to put in my “Fun Friday Fact Folder”.

i really hate homework i think it cuts into time with our familys and friends and i agree disgruntled student and many others that commented on here, i spend almost my whole night doing homework and then i get up only to go back to school to do it all again, i have had and still do have family in the hospital like my grandmother and aunt. I to think that it is time that you could be spending with your family member. They say homework only gets harder and im spending 5 hours a night not to mention the time i spend studing for tests. Im only a freshman in highschool granted i think the work should be hard more responcibilty but 5 hours worth?!? and i know people who stay up till 3am trying to get there homeowk done bacause there in honners. I think homework should be done at school, not home. Thank you for taking the time to read my complant i just needed to vent lolz sorry for any spelling errors,

  21. Shelby says:

Homework cuts into our lives at home, a place that should be for us to live our lives, not do what the schools want us to do. We are who the schools want us to be. We need to get good grades to go into the next grade in school, we need to take tests (some of which are made for showing how well the students are doing for competition mostly) which involves studying, which then cuts into our life at home, which is invaded with homework. School should not be our only lives, but at home we have homework that sometimes takes us all of the time we do have at home, even taking us so long it has us staying up past our bedtimes! Is it just for the practice? If so… it’s NOT making perfect… I only get this when I have the teacher explaining it to me. I don’t feel like I learn anything… and I feel like if it’s for school it should be done AT THE SCHOOL! I have friends who have a test in every subject every week, and their studying hours cut into their homework hours, and they have such busy lives at home as it is they can do nothing but feel stupid that they don’t get it. It causes me stress when I can’t get it… and also it’s EMBERASSING to have other students correcting it (something we do in my algebra class… which is my hardest class). It screws with our self esteem and that’s already a big enough problem without homework… especially for girls in middle school and high school. We have no time to simply be ourselves… which is something that everyone should do! Summer is the only time when we really find ourselves and remember what we like to do… and sometimes school is something kids have to attend during summer… not that they get homework from summer school. We can’t be what the school expects us to be. Homework should be banned… imagine how much happier kids would be. And they would have no excuse to not spend time with family. Ha ha! But seriously… it’s rediculous. We have what? Six classes minimum… that’s six subjects to do at home, with only so much time before the next day of school. And weekends are NOT long enough for us to re-energize ourselves for school. REDICULOUS

  27. Arcadia453 says:

The problem is not the fact that there is homework, the problem is how it is presented. Naturally, human beings are very curious, and would want to learn about the world around them. But students are FORCED to do homework and there is practically no other option, which changes their curiousity to neglect so that they really don’t like learning, and would prefer mindless activity. That’s why human beings today like watching tv or playing video games so much.

Also, schools are based off of a single learning style (auditory), and believe that students can learn simply from telling them everything that they want them to know. This is definately not true, especially since there has been a sharp increase in the number of kids with other learning styles (visual and kinesthetic).

I hate homework,it cuts into our lives and we have less time to have time spend with family and friends. It also adds to depression, suicidal thoughts, and so much more.We should have a choice on it,whether to do it or not.Just because people get Cs or Ds or Fs doesn’t mean thet are dumb, just means they A)didn’t do it B)too lazy C)don’t want to do it or D)other. We can’t have time with our families either which is really sad.I feel for all of you and it really stinks.TGIF though but still.I always have a ton to do and I have like double eyes.I see it through a kids point of view and a non schooler’s point of view. When a person has homework, they usually hate the subject it came out of and they end up hating to learn.I know we all have to go through but it adds on to the list of stresses on us.We have one life, thats it and if we don’t spend it with enjoyment, faith, and family and friends, where’s the other memories??I have homework everyday and its like a stalker.Never stops. What makes me even more sad is that we see people well…..pass away right before our eyes:( This (homework) can also cause problems like for example:say a friend wants to hang out,you can’t,got homework to do.Lets say this goes on for about 2 weeks.Your friend is annoyed and is getting angry.Eventually, they will stop talking to you, thinking you are avoiding them and maybe move one.Worst case sceneario is if they get so angry, they will make fun of you, making your self esteem go down. Some people, because of this kind of sadness will commit suicide.Homework also gets our families stressed too:( Thank you for listening to me drown on and on and allowing me to set my feelings flow out like a waterfall πŸ™‚ May God bless you all and let this homework issue be fixed, and fast!!

This is the first marking period of my Sophmore year in high school, and I must say that the homework is seemingly never-ending, and most times I feel suffocated by it.

Tomorrow, I will have a drama club practice until 6 o’clock, and a band festival at 6 o’clock until 10:30pm. Based on the amount of homework I usually have, and that I will have a chemistry test the next day, I presume that I will be up until 2:00am.

Overall, homework is exhausting. Some is beneficial, for example, practicing math equations at home solidifies what you learn at school. In contrast, it seems that reading can be done without extensive questions on the chapter and foreign languages can be learned without creativity-based projects (these are often subjective grading). These are only my opinions as a student who is pounded with homework every night, most of it being rather tedious, though.

I, personally, am a 15 year old in the 10th grade, and am, if I say so myself, on the higher end of the intelligience spectrum. I feel that at a middle and high school level, homework is absolutely necesary. We simply do not have enough time during a given school day to cover the curriculum fully enough to truly learn it, and homework is the only logical solution to the problem. However, my issue does not come from the concept; instead, I disagree with the quantity. I am in nearly all upper level classes and the workload is, quite frankly, impossible to sustain. I am lucky each night if I finish my homework within three or four hours of my starting it. There have been numerous occassions where I have been up well into the night working on just homework, let alone the collosal projects that we are regularly assigned. I need sleep, and I simply am not getting it.

So I say we need homework, just a bit less of it would be nice. Unless you don’t mind me sleeping through your class.

Frequently Frustrated…what a well spoken young person you are!

I’m a Mom of an elementary aged child and while I don’t agree with you that homework is necessary, I certainly agree with you that less would be better if it has to be given. You see, it’s not your fault that the curriculum can’t be taught in daylight hours..so I don’t see why you should have to work overtime to learn it. I would much rather hold the school administrators responsible, the adults in this situation after all, and allow the children the freedom they need to sleep and eat properly and work out their social lives. The teen years are years when trying many things is possible…when avenues are the most open. It’s important to explore…not just keep your nose to the grindstone.

I get around 4 hours homework each night at the moment which is not bad because my brother who’s 13 got 7 hours homework last night because he was out sick he had to do a 20-30 page project for this morning. I hate homework as do my friends and cousins because they all tell me and complane. And i know my tough guy brother does aswell because he cried himself to sleep last night and because when he was done his homework he threw his bag in the hall and stomped up the stair swearing and saying curse that darn teacher and he even called her a b***h!

  56. Dreading School says:

I am in eighth grade, and in the name of preparing us for high school, my teachers give me and my peers three or four hours of homework a night. I am expected to get A’s, so I go over everything after I finish to look for mistakes. It’s not that it’s so horrible, I just sometimes can’t really get that much sleep because I live about 45 minutes away from my school, and as I do multiple extra curricular activities (also expected of me), I can get home at 6:30, take a shower, eat dinner, and start my homework at 8:00. I admit that I take a while in the shower, but honestly if I have a choice of getting home after being at school from 7:30 to 5:45 and starting my homework immediately and getting less sleep because I did one little thing I enjoyed, I will get less sleep. Anything less feels like surrendering my humanity. I am human. Moreover, I am 14. I refuse.
Another problem is that if I start my homework at eight, I am not as efficient as I would be if I began at an earlier hour, so I sometimes take so long to do my homework that I get to bed at one. I get up at six, so that can be five hours of sleep. I know that I’m probably just spoiled, but I’m so sick of it all… and I still get A minuses in some of my classes, no matter how hard I try. I’ve talked to my homeroom teacher, but he is probably the only teacher that doesn’t give too much homework. His just usually takes twenty minutes, so it’s not a big deal. But as much as I love my English teacher, she consistently gives an hour of homework a night, and sometimes…
And constantly there are projects, and constantly is there a test to study for, and constantly me and my friends are stressed.
I hope some teacher will read this and care, but I doubt it. My parents want to try and complain, and get me special treatment, but again I refuse. I will go down with the ship, and anything less is abandoning my friends. We are a tightly knit group of kids, and we will not screw each other over. We have honor, as much as teenagers can have honor. I will stick with it, and luckily my parents respect this.
I not only am worried for myself, but for some of the other kids in my grade. I frequently help people with their homework and I also help people study for tests. For some of my peers, homework can be a six hour affair, just because they have difficulty understanding the assignment.
I will deal with all of this. It will turn out in the end. But thanks for an outlet to vent. Sometimes things just get so frustrating. But thanks.

Dreading School- I live in another country where homework demands are not so great and so to me it seems unfair that you have to suffer through so much more simply because of where you live. You may have it better than some people on this website but perhaps the real question is of why so many school students have it bad in the first place. Is so much homework really necessary for a good education?

Homework in some cases can be beneficial for helping you practise skills but it seems that in the case of many on this site, it’s had quite the opposite effect. If you lack sleep and are stressed, you probably won’t be able to learn as much in class. A psychologist somewhere said that unless basic human needs are fulfilled, people can’t take on higher order tasks such as learning. Also, homework eats away time you could use to work on your interests or study in a way that best suits you. I love learning foreign languages and as I have felt that my Chinese class at school doesn’t fulfill my needs, I get tuition so I can practise speaking Chinese and I have borrowed books from the library in Chinese so that I can learn some new words and read what I can, things that I wouldn’t have the time to do if I had to do as much homework as some people on this site. I hope to one day become fluent or almost fluent in Chinese.

You are brave to stick with the current situation, but I think that perhaps you would be braver still to try and make improvements; after all, you could have it better off by simply living elsewhere in the world. Perhaps you can work with your friends to make change to the school system over there. That way things could potentially get better and you wouldn’t be “screwing each other over,” as you put it.

I do hope that things get better for you and for others on this site.

Dreading School, I hope you’ll reconsider this. I think you should encourage your parents to go in and complain, and if you get the chance, encourage your friends’ parents too. Otherwise, there’s no force for change.

I don’t see anything noble about going down with the ship. It isn’t worth it.

While I do not believe that homework is totally pointless, I feel that there is an extent to which it is ridiculous. I am in the International Baccalaureate Programme, and was prepared for heavy work, but this is just ridiculous. I spend approximately two hours each night /per subject/ and that’s not including the major assignments that are constantly being assigned or the many extracurriculars/volunteering that we are expected to do!

I have sacrificed family time to the point that I see them at supper, and my sleep patterns are so erratic that my immune system has suffered. Many nights I’ll not get to sleep until 2am but have to wake up by 6am to get to school on time for the next day.

I believe that homework is imperative to reviewing what you’ve learnt and applying it to questions/examples that you will see on examinations. I also think, however, that I have so much work that I’m not sleeping, and that my learning is suffering as a consequence. I cannot stay awake in any of my classes, and my attention span has shortened so that it is even more difficult to complete my homework.

Right now I have a lot of work to do, as well as two exams in a few weeks, my IOP which is worth a great deal of my marks.

Sure I want good grades and I want to be able to get a good career, but what about my childhood? I should be rollerblading and shopping and going to the theatre! I should be watching TV and going camping on weekends instead of sitting at my laptop doing essay after essay, and then at the desk answering question after question and filling out syllabus after syllabus.

I am stressed, I feel like crying most of the time, and I’m wasting away my childhood at my homework desk. I’m sixteen and don’t have /time/ for boyfriends. I’m sixteen and the only time I have to myself is the 45min busride to school in which I can listen to music or watch a show on my iPod if I’m not cramming for yet another test.

This is not how I should be spending my childhood.

The IB Programme was supposed to prepare me for university; it wasn’t supposed to destroy my health, my social life, my family life, and the short part of my life that I’m supposed to spend having fun and finding myself.

i HATE homework with a burning passion. the problem with my school is that people in every single class i have mess around instead of trying to actually learn. it is extremely distracting and the teacher stops doing whatever he/she is doing if just one kid doesn’t finish a conversation with the person next to them. and so, since my teacher stopped teaching us because of one person, we have homework on whatever didn’t get done. another matter i would like to address is the teacher talking while he/she gave us something to work on, and demands you pay attention to whatever he/she is saying instead of doing the assignment at hand. UGH.

    Hello.

I’m a 15 year old student, soon 16,and I have to say that homework,no matter how boring, hard and time consuming it is, is essential for your better understanding of what you did at school.

There are several problems that need to be adressed with homework.

1.Teachers often assign more exercises than needed. They bombard you with exercises JUST to make sure that they will have a good reputation amongst teachers ”this teacher is good” or maybe they don’t wanna cope too much explaining to you in school how to do your exercises.Or maybe teachers often assign NOT IMPORTANT exercices than can be very time consuming…That depends on your professor.Personally,I would never assign my students anything irrelevant to what we did at school. If I assigned them something,it would be just to make them better in something ex:Math equations or physics laws and stuff.

2.Homework tends to be hard simply because the books can be not too well written,or the teachers simply assign homework not yet learned.

I also wanna note a few things that can maybe help you in your homework:

1.Pay attention at school. If u pay attention you save LOTS of time.

2.The best day to study is between yesterday and tomorrow.Which is today. If u study now, you’ll lose time, yes, but if u really understand everything you’ll be ready for the tests/exams coming on your way which SAVES u time.

3.You wanna save time?Don’t be on facebook or msn or skype while ”studying”.Tell yourself, time to study,1 hour studying BUT CONSANT AND EFFECTIVE 1 hour. Then you can do w/e u want for the rest of the time…U can always study more if u want.

Things are NOT as pathetic as we make them seem.At least not YET.The older you are,the more your responsibilities, can’t do anything about this, you’ll have to study. But think of this.Do u wanna be a successful citizen when u grow up?Do u want to become what you’ve always dreamed of?Then you gotta work hard.No matter how much time it takes or how much effort,if u study,YOU WILL be REWARDED for what you did all these years. The decision is yours.

Personally,I’ve got enough time to hang out with friends on friday+saturday+sunday, while attain english+french classes+h/w for school + go to basketball practices AND matches. And yes,my average grade is A- to B+.Yes,schedule’s a bit tight, but u got make it work.

Though my personal belief is that homework SHOULD be less. That depends on the subject and your professor of course but that’s how it should be.These years are and should be the best years of your life, and the the years you start building your career and social life later on.

    P.S. I also hate homework

long rant sums up what I’ve always said. Homework overload is not to teach responsibility or make your kids smarter. We no longer buy into that canard. It’s work sent home because simply put, it did not get done in school. It’s a way of masking a major deficiency, that the day at school is often mediocre at best.

THAT is the real dilemma. Our kids are wasting their time in school and staying up till two to homeschool.

And all of the people out there saying, this chick is crazy, no, I don’t have anger issues, no, I’m not autistic. I’m stressed. Teachers will work you until your breaking point and the saying is “if it doesn’t kill you it makes you stronger.” While that maybe true for later in life, at the time you’re experiencing it, you don’t think about any benifits. You don’t consider that the teachers are trying to help you. All you feel is the stress. All you want to do is tear up the assignment and throw it out the window of a moving car, smiling and laughin like a madman. At least, that’s how it is for me. I am working on an essay right now, and you can tell because of my proper grammer and such, but I am so aggravated by just the simple nature of the project. I need four pages but I can easily fit all of the information into one and it works and sounds just as good if not better than it would if there were no page requirement.

My daughter spent between 4 -6 hours on homework – every single night (since 6th grade). Every weekend brought more. She was so stressed, had no life outside of school work. When she finally got in to college (one of the Ivy Leagues) she had LESS homework than she had had in high school.

My son, who is now a sophomore, has two specific learning disabilities, along with severe ADHD. Of course they also give him hours of homework. He is not capable of doing this. So, I have been doing it. I can get him to memorize just about anything. He will get an A on a test, then forget everything in 1 week.

Schools are still being run as if our world has not changed since the inception of education. It does not work. Not for the brightest students, not for the most challenged. I know, I have one of each.

Our family life was wasted, for years, by the absurd notion that homework would set you up for all sorts of great payoffs. My daughter with the Ivy League educations (graduated 1st in her college)? She is working for minimum wage. Fuck you homework – you wasted years of our lives which we will never get back.

I hate homework because it causes stress, which of course, is not healthy for Homo Sapiens. History has shown us that a great majority of children do not like school because of how much work they have to do, the rest mostly from bullies. Homework is a bully though. It picks on kids by stressing them out, telling them what to do and so much more psychological damage. It’s a nuerotoxin, it hurts their brain. They bust their butts for 8 hours, and more including homework. Even adults don’t have to work that long. Also, homework is intended for “study”, though all it does is make kids stay up all night, fearing they’ll fail the test if they don’t study. Homework is no more than a stupid nuisence, and for many kids, a psychological weapon. That’s why I hate homework.

Im currently in secondary school about to take my gcse’s, I absolutely hate homework, school, and frankly anything to do with it. Im a music producer and practically dont need any qualifications for this, just a talent. This is one of the reasons why I love my music producing, although I know I must get my gcse’s as a back up, its something I want to do in in life and Im here to follow my dreams. My parents are going through a divorce, and I have 4 siblings all in their 20’s, they didnt get that many gcse’s at school and they are all doing reasonably well at life. I dont know, I dont have time for homework or school at all to be honest, its hard enough producing a track in the holidays compared to school days. Only my friends and family keep me going through this nightmare of a time through the situation at home abd school etc…. Quite frankly I can see right through the schools pressurising and depressing ways, but I wish others could aswell, they should be encouraging individuals to do what THEY want to do, and thats my moto in life. Anyway, we have to deal wuth these things and move on, and maybe from now on I should just get it out of the way as quick as possible and not worry, as then I can really prove everything I have said above…. πŸ™‚

I had to spend money on coke so I can keep active at night doing HOMEWORK. Instead of become and dreaming of what i’m going to be when I grow up i’m stuck doing something that stresses me out. I gained weight fast, my friends barely go to my house, I forgot my dog, barely went outside and cried all night from the stress I get almost everyday!

The teacher would be angry at me for not doing my homework, it’s not my fault I got five different assignments. I even forget to pray. Life’s more harder in middle school. Even my mum and dad don’t have time for us kids.

I hope one day the teachers realise were struggling to keep with more IMPORTANT things!

Homework feels like a teacher’s way of making up for what they didn’t have time to teach you. A good teacher will not need to assign homework or if they do it is simply there to clarify the lesson. Schools these days seem a bit lazy, but so are some of the students (no offense). But some kids lead rough lives and don’t need the stress of homework adding to it. Some thought provoking homework I enjoy, but mindless problem solving will only help you in the short term. Staying up for 8, 12 or never even sleeping will almost never help you in school, so why would teachers assign that much? Do they want us to fail? I feel if teachers communicated what assignments they were giving to ensure that the students would not be overwhelmed, would really help solve the issue. Thanks for reading the thoughts spewing from my mind.

Homework probably causes bullies. It’s annoying and stressful and truthfully wants to make me rage. Bullies want to get rid of their bad feelings by hurting people. Also if you live in a bad family and have homework and tests and are failing school you pretty much are going to have a bully. Homework is costing kids lives for something tedious, annoying, and pointless (for the most part) Sure extra study is good but making kids stressed and having to work on it instead of doing things with family, it’s not worth it. Homework is stupid I don’t care what teachers say its pointless and annoying especially for me with 3 out of 5 school days being taken up by after school activities. I’m actually supposed to be doing my homework right now.

I’ve been doing homework for 3 hours now and I’m not even done with one thing. I have almost 100 problems for pre-algebra half of it our class hasn’t learned. A whole project that I haven’t started. And studying for tests which I have every day of the week. I also have to finish a 300 page book with annotating and then start another one. Then I have a science report coming up. I also have social studies and I don’t even have the right things to do that so I’m going to fail. Yay….. School is my bully. People wonder why video games and technology is becoming more popular. It’s a kids last chance for escape. At least it’s something we WANT to do. Who WANTS to do homework. We didn’t even get off for Columbus Day when all the other schools did. At least we don’t have all mean teachers. Science is my favorite but we get the most homework for it. I dread school because of homework. If there was no homework I would probally LOVE school, but I guess not I still hate school and home work is still here. At least I have great summers and good friends. WE DONT EVEN HAVE RECESS AND CANT EVEN TALK DURING LUNCH AND WE CANT TALK DURING CLASS OR AFTER SCHOOL BECAUSE OF STUPID HOMEWORK. I WISH I COULD BURN HOMEWORK WITH FIRE. And homework also kills trees. SAVE THE TREES KILL THE HOMEWORK!!!!!

Okay I’ll go to sleep AFTER I do my 500 pages of homework eat dinner go to after school activities and spend time with my family. Thank you school! (My mom wonders why I’m always tired…)

Homework is terrible. I pay so much attention in class and I’m in a building for 6 hours…but for some reason teachers don’t appreciate any of the work we’re doing so they give us a chunk of homework. I got the dentist, doctor, and family situations going on, so I don’t have time to do my homework. When I am done, I eat and then go to bed!!!I got no time to celebrate myself completing homework. It’s time consuming, difficult, frustrated, and even worse the teachers don’t even pay attention to our time…Hello!!!I got 5 teachers who force me to do homework, so give me fast, easier, cool, and considerate homework. Part 2-Here are the Cons of Homework:
    Time consuming-
    Frustrating-
Filled with Review(Shouldn’t the people that know the stuff already get a free homework pass?)-
Waste of Time(hello, you do realize we students have after school activities)-
Less Sleep(what a shame schools promote that but don’t do a good job promoting it)-
    Decreases Energy-
    Kills Trees-
Causes less time with friends and family-
Teachers give us a chunk of homework not bothering that we have homework from other teachers(that’s about 4 or 5 periods with homework)-
Main Reason why People can’t hang out with each other more often-
AND THATS WHY HOMEWORK MUST END. ITS SO NOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTRUL(another way of saying something is so terrible, in fact worse than terrible)

I’m a student, who does get a lot of homework. I’m at school 7hours a day. and every week for most of my subjects I get homework. Personally I don’t think we should ban homework but at least cut it down by a lot. Most nights I’m up to midnight if not longer just finishing homework. Something should be done to reduce the amount of homework a teenager gets a week because its just not healthy!
    End Homework!!

This is an ongoing issue. As a sophomore in high school, I wake up at 6:30, commute to school, get out at 4:15, then return well after 5:00. By that point I am mentally drained, yet there is a plethora of assignments awaiting my attention. As a result of tedious/excessive homework, I have minimal time to spend in my own personal interests/hobbies, or even simply sit down with my family. This has led to broken relationships and rough decisions on deciding if church is worth attending on Sundays, or if I want sufficient sleep. I hope this ongoing problem ceases plaguing our generation’s youth, as I have witnessed the conflicts fueled by teachers’ incapability of understanding the plight of students.
