High School Students Admit they Cheat to Get Their Homework Completed

According to an article in the Bethesda, Maryland, Walt Whitman High School newspaper, of the 500 Whitman students surveyed, 70 percent admitted to cheating on a test, and 95 percent admitted to copying homework. One of the students is quoted as saying, “I consider copying homework to be cheating yourself, but I do not consider it an offense. I feel better about copying if the other person doesn’t care if I copy their homework. You’ve got to do what you got to do to survive.

  1. and to anonymous #48, homework is ther also as a responsability, if your given homework and you dont do it it goes on your report card and when an employer looks at that and sees that they see that you irresponsible and you wont be a good worker, and if you cheat and go to collage or whatever and they ask you to do somethingthat your report says you can and you can’t well what the fuck are you going to say to them, YOU CHEATED!! and what the hell are they gonna do with you? their gonna fire you arse, and if you get fired from one job then other imployers are gonna wanna know why or just flat out regect you, its not about you schoolin as much as its about you responsability

  2. It’s wholly unsuprising to me that 95% of high school students cheat to get their homework done, because I cheat to finish it sometimes. I just don’t have the time to finish it. Not only that, but schools now put terrible pressure on young people to perform well on everything. My school system is considered to be one of the best, but at a high price- our students are stressed and more prone to cheating, especially on something they can take home. It’s not even really considered cheating to hurriedly copy down someone’s homework before the teacher comes around to check it. It’s only considered cheating if the content is actually going to be graded. As far as cheating goes, for as long as people insist that if one does poorly in high school, one will do poorly in the rest of one’s life, the reality of cheating will remain the same.

  3. i’m currently in year 10,
the shear amount of homework I get is just ridiculous.
It has gotten to the point where I have become physically/mentally ill from homework, its unbelievably enraging when you do homework that your teacher put penalties resulting in detentions and notes to parents if the work isn’t submitted so that adds a considerable amount of pressure only to have the teacher on the due date go “OK class, don’t worry about yesterdays homework” and shrug off this work that you have stressed over because of all the emphasis they have put on it only to find all your hard work was for absolutely nothing, all that stress and worry has birthed nothing but mixed feelings of confusion and anger. Granted I do see some importance of homework, last semester i had a really good English teacher, he set a bit of homework but he would give us a week for each work sheet, the worksheets weren’t short by any means but he actually read them and gave comments on your answers, I’m generally strong in English but the homework we were given has defiantly improved my grades as it bolstered my knowledge of our subject.

There is no freakin’ way this kid can get all of this homework done in a night by herself. This is every night, night after night. I am sick of it! I graduated high school and college and don’t really relish doing homework again but will because there is no way this kid could do it on her own! Now if I could just find the answers to this spanish crossword puzzle!

You are sitting there with the notes why the fuck.do I need to memorize historical dates and random terms I can google? Personal experiences: more than once I have had teachers blatently mark my answer wrong and a friends.right when we.had the.exact same awnser on a test. That’s good for my future! And no, teachers don’t admit they were wrong you are fucked. I am not going to sit here and say cheating is ok in any regard school or not but what do you expect when most of.these kids are way smarter than you were at their age and they have more bullshit to do that won’t do them any good? Sure, some of the posters here are complete idiot kids who will have no future at all but homework won’t change that. Maybe instead of planning homework assignments to waste time for the.kids.why don’t you try to get the.drugs.out of school? Hi I’m a teacher and I look the.other.way when i see cheaters and call myself anonymous who bitches about cheaters! You are huge winners! Is it any wonder why you make dogshit money? I cheated in hs and college because you have to. It’s that or fail unless u hate life and love to be.distracted.by nonsense. I didn’t cheat on tests really ( did tho) but homework was a must. Not everyday not every class. The bottom motherfucking line is teachers are dumber than the students that’s why you can’t teach them. the kids really.hold your future in their hands than that scares you all. Don’t piss them off and maybe one of them will remember you down the road. FYI kids don’t be fooled the only way u make it in this world is from having connections or being smart and I don’t mean knowing where a comma goes you can learn that when u get hired at comma, inc. The kids that actually do.there shit themselves are more likely to make it imo but there lives still might suck based on personality glitches. The kids who cheat all the time will live with there parents forever and work at mickey d’s. The kids that do what they need to will bite your ass down the road when they stack.paperz. why don’t schools create a class called “future” instead of history. I can learn current and past all day online I don’t need school. If somebody had any sense in the admin then the lightbulb would.flicker here. If you do you will get a lower grade- most probably because you have not done that bit extra-but other people have and they could get a better job then you. If you cheat thats not you doing the work.
I’m in y8 and I spend a lot longer than half an hour on my h/w because I want to prove to people I can aim to success and get A and A* in later life.

  9. Wow, eye opener to read all this. I hear the calls for not having useless word searches and coloring assignments. I hate seeing how little that paradigm has changed in the 25 years I have been teaching. On the other hand, your mind is like a muscle and if you don’t exercise it it becomes weak. A good student can learn a lot from a bad teacher, but the best teacher can teach nothing to a terrible student. I see this on a daily basis. Students have cheated on everything so much that they have lowered their skills below their grade level. Now nothing makes sense because the expectations are above their ability level, which only pushes them to cheat more. In the end, they can’t write persuasively, do basic math, or effectively do anything except cheat. Thus the 50% drop out rate in college, and the fact that even those that graduate are only likely to be granted a diploma in cheatology. By the time you figure it out, you have cheated yourself out of a future. Even when given a valuable challenging assignment, students are incapable because they are so tired and burned out by the meaningless system we have that was designed during the industrial revolution, that they don’t or can’t even try. My students can’t even understand my questions, must less create an effective Internet search to retrieve enough facts to support or even form their own opinion. The refuse to read anything, they just copy, paste, format, print. They haven’t ever read anything, only looked up the answers to useless questions at the end of the chapter (or copied). You have to absorb a few facts to be able to form an opinion and make a decision and do the higher order thinking skills you say you aren’t asked to use. Otherwise you make you decisions based on emotion and not reason. I see a lot of that here in these paragraphs. Take control and instead of giving up, make the most of your education. It won’t be perfect, but there is nothing more satisfying than being intelligent and having insight into the world. Ignorant people “don’t know what they don’t know”. The education system changes slowly, and now with the advent of testing for teacher evaluation, teachers will be drilling facts even harder so you will do well on a test that shows they did their job. What I wouldn’t give for a class of real students who wanted to learn, discuss, argue, solve problems, and grow. Instead I get 1 or 2 of these kids who had great parents instill ethics and morals in them mixed in with the tired jaded group writing here. We are all better than this. Students and Teachers! Don’t surrender your education to the system, and don’t forfeit it by cheating. What a waste of your time and mine.

  10. Wow, people have been commenting on this for 5 years now! Here goes: I found this article because I am currently grading a stack of assignments that are obviously copied. This happens all the time.

As a high school science teacher, I find some points to agree with. Teachers should never assign “busy work” or work that won’t actually be graded. Its ridiculous, and a waste of everyone’s time. So that’s what teachers are doing wrong.

Now lets talk about what teenagers are doing wrong. First, the irony of teenagers who can’t spell (even with spell checking) or clearly communicate complaining that school is stupid, and that they already know everything is simply delicious. Hey kids, drop out NOW, while you still know everything. Go, set the world on fire with your unique combination of ambition and raw intellect. Except that you don’t know anything yet. That COULD be a problem.

I can sympathize with the homework situation, but the rest of the story is that most teenagers don’t do class work either. And they don’t pay attention in class. And they don’t read the book. And when they can’t pass a test (even by cheating) they whine and complain that the teacher never taught the stuff, or that they have test anxiety. And they get mommy and daddy to pester the school into giving the kid an IEP or 504 plan.

Well, I give no homework, I give the kids plenty of time in class to finish all assignments, I give re-takes on tests, and still have kids who can’t seem to find the effort to pass. And they want to make it all my fault. Bullshit.

Before I was a teacher, I was self-employed for 20 years. I hired and fired probably 5 employees for every keeper I got. So I know that an awful lot of adults are worthless bags of crap, it isn’t unique to teenagers.

In every classroom of 30+ kids, I have 5 or 6 who consistently just quietly pay attention and do their work. They finish and hand in their work before they leave the class every day. No homework. And they actually have less stress. It is faster and easier to do it right than it is to do it wrong.

The final thing that teenagers do that is worth mentioning is that they lie, constantly, about everything, to make themselves look better. So all the complainers talking about their hours and hours of homework need to be taken with a grain of salt. They create a narrative in their imagination, featuring themselves as the heroic underdog, up against the leviathan of corrupt authority, thereby making their laziness, dishonesty and irresponsibility “heroic” in their own mind.

  11. P.S. Anonymous 41, the sophomore with the “IQ over 180”, well congratulations. You are over 6 standard deviations above the mean. That means, on a normally bell curve, you have a higher IQ than 99.9999998027% of the population. In other words, there are 6 people on the planet with a higher IQ than you. But why am I telling you this? Certainly you have already know this.

Well… Bullshit. If you were a sophomore with that IQ, you would already be enrolled in graduate school. A perfect example of adolescent fantasy at work. Or if you really believed you had a 180 IQ, then you are not as smart as you think. The Stanford-Binet test, for example, doesn’t even allow for scores above 170.

By the way, anyone consider this… Kids who lie and cheat on homework and tests might just grow up to be adults who lie and cheat on spouses and at work? What are the moral implications of the fact that these kids “see nothing wrong” with cheating at school? Do they see anything wrong with taking money from a cash register?

The schools and teachers are not the only ones who need to change.

  12. Firstly, let me say in advance I apologize for the rant. I honestly really do think that homework is ridiculous sometimes. In my personal experiences, I have found that 70% of the time doing homework proves to be of no help to my actual learning of a subject. Especially when it is math or science. When I don’t understand something in class – then why do teachers and educators think it is going to help us any better if they assign us more work after school? Doing that won’t make us understand any better. I hate the way people educate these days; especially in highschool (which in my opinion is the worst.) I am in grade 10, and last semester I tried so hard in my math course to do homework and study etc; but it was impossible to concentrate in class with all of the students acting like idiots. So it never paid off, and no matter how hard I tried on the homework, because I got taught poorly during lessons I came dangerously close to failing the course. I would love it if I was educated with more one on one attention, and we didn’t have limited time to learn a subject in a course. Because of this nothing absorbs and I am left feeling helpless and like there is something wrong with me because I don’t get it. But, unfortunately that is the way kids are taught in highschools across the world. And I strongly disagree with it. I believe that everyone is smart in their own way, and everyone has their own separate ways of learning. >.< SCREW THIS ~~I AM TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL YO. !!!!!

  13. Alright I have read some of these comments. College courses SHOULD have homework because it’s something you WANT to do and are paying good money for it. Elementary (1-5/6) schools SHOULD have homework because it’s learning about basic fundamentals….

BUT JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOLS should have VERY limited homework… of course I cheated in school when I needed to but I understood the concepts either way.. Assignments should be done in the class so your teacher can teach you and help, not just give you papers and reading to teach yourself the materials… in that sense we would need classroom administrators to make sure your in class if you have all the materials to learn yourself without teachers….what’s different in jr and high schools from college is that the burden of education is on THEM… not on YOU… someone said cheating shouldn’t be punished because it’s so easy to do… Totally agree.

  14. Well, I’m back. I have to say I agree with a lot of things many of you have said. However, I believe more in what I know through my own experiences. Simply put, people are ignorant, lazy, selfish, dishonest and grimey. Not everyone, just most. I’m not bitter about anything when I say this. I have been paying close attention to human tendencies in adults since my last post here and sadly, each day, I come across more incompetant, retarded fucksticks than I ever thoughtt to be possible when I was a kid. That being said, I do believe in the value of a good education; for those who are intelligent enough to want one. Schools are a joke. You get probably the same % of ‘real’ teachers as you do ‘real’ students. The teachers that posted here obviously care about their students and I commend that. Just remember that your level of commitment and caring doesn’t mean you don’t Fuck things up plenty inside and outside the classroom. In my opinion, I don’t think anyone cares to hear analogies which describe how kids are little pricks who will amount to jack shit. Just say it straight out. It’s much clearer. Personally, I feel I wasted my scholastic potential. What I mean is I didn’t give a flying Fuck about school, homework, teachers, rules, etc. I was not a troublemaker in school, and got my shit done. I just did a half assed job (high school and college) and I definetly did believe that I already knew way too much. We learn from our mistakes; easy way or hard. I “pay the price” for this. I did this to myself. I would be lying if I said I don’t love my life and what I do. It’s doubtful that I would be doing anything different with myself had I worked my ass off in school. I’m a rare case because I use skills that people won’t learn in school in my line of work. Nevertheless, I will always wonder what would have been if I was able to care enough years ago to drop my teachers on their heads (metaphor). Interpret that as many ways as you can. Shit it might not even make any sense. As far as homework and cheating is concerned, if I could go back I would cheat more than I did. I didn’t cheat much, but most people I know did. Homework is still horseshit no matter how u look at it. 6+ hours a day in class all day is plenty. The brain needs some fucking rest! Let’s also not forget that when students do cheat, they are still subconciously picking up a lot of random concepts and facts. It’s up to them if they want to be worthless losers or big time ballers. I still have little to no respect for teachers. Don’t take that too personal though because respect is something to be earned, especially in a crackhead filled society like the one we live in. I had way more bad teachers than good. I watched one of my highschool teachers lie to the dean of the private school I attented to protect himself and get me tossed before junior year. Lmao. I make more money sitting on my couch for a few weeks than most teachers make in a year. Let’s be honest with ourselves here. Cliffs notes: stay in school mmmkay

It seems that, considering the sheer amount of homework given, teachers would understand that it is impossible, without staying up all hours of the night, to compleate the homework, and because of this students are pressured to the last resort, cheating, but when students are found doing it they are severely punished.

Well, the thing is those “teachers” think we can manage to finish all the shit they’ve given to us and they do understand it’s absolutely impossible to finish everything in a limited time period given.. Take my teachers for instance, I realize no matter how super-duper good they are as teachers, they don’t really care about what you do or what you don’t do, they just want you to hand in the damn homework just so they can be freed from being blamed by their heads.. Since I’ve started my Pre-U, they’ve (teachers) all changed so much.. good became bad, bad became worse, and worse became shit.. One of them I’d never met before is worse than a shit.. That sissy, self-obsessed, gay, married man!! He’s my mathematics teacher, I used to love mathematics so much!! But NOT NOW!! Since he’s been dumping like what? A pile of shitty homework that needs a thousand years to finish to us? THEY DON’T CARE!! THEY’RE JUST DOING THE SHIT OUT OF THEIR SALARIES!!

  19. For those of you juggling homework with extra curricular activities, I feel your pain. I’m a freshman (9th grade) in highschool. I have near perfect grades, well over a 4.0 due to PRE-AP/AP classes, never have had any disciplinary referrals, and I “cheat” (copy mainly), on every assignment I get. Why? Because I do not have the time to waste on three hours of bullshit that will influence a number that will decide my fate. Its sad to see how our early life is based around numbers. Let us not confuse our grades with intelligence, or education with intelligence for that matter. I understand you get homework to retain or practice something, but let’s be serious, you either get it or you don’t, or you simply need practice. If you didn’t get it in class, that twenty the next day won’t help you anymore. Most homework assignments are pointless. Coloring? Crosswords? Busy work that doesn’t challenge the mind at all? Copying pages of notes, even though that’s not my learning style? Totally off topic, but I believe you should take courses that correspond with your passion, and YOU do any form of homework from there. Ninety-nine percent of the information learned is useless, unless that is your field of interest. Why give homework or even teach kids who don’t want to be there in the first place? How will they like something if they have never been exposed to it? If I didn’t like reading 1st through 8th, what makes you think I’ll enjoy it then? Maybe they’re shrouded by a shield of ignorance and they haven’t learned yet? Let them fuck themselves up, you can’t help someone who won’t help themselves. School in general is pointless. I’m not going to walk into a job interview reciting Shakespeare, saying simple minded math formulas, or regurgitate pointless facts. Just saying.

  20. Honestly, I do think that homework is nessicary for an enducation, but to an extent. I am currently a sophomore, and am regulating a GPA of 3.8. Sure, homework sucks, but we need it to further inhance our skills for class the next day or the rest of our lives.

I agree, plenty of teachers give out quite a bit of homework. My math teacher gives out a minimum of 20 problems a night, and it stinks. I do have a life outside of school (I have a job) but I need to get this shit done to get anywhere in life. So for all of you students out there who complain about having too much homework, I bet it’s not even too much, but you really just don’t want to do it.

I’ll admit, I have cheated on homework before, but it was either because I had to work a late shift, had family problems or wasn’t feeling too great. I work hard to get the best grades I can and I do hope that some of you students who posted on here get your act together.

  21. I have 5 classes a day, each class, I’m assigned home work which usually takes an hour and a half or more.. That’s about 7.5 hours. So if a teenager is at school for roughly 8 hours, and they are doing homework for 7+ hours, and they need AT LEAST 9 HOURS OF SLEEP FOR THEIR DEVELOPING BRAINS, then they may have 0-1 hours for other activities like eating, bathing, exercise, socializing (which is actually incredibly important for emotional, mental, and physical health, as well as the development of skills vital to their future career and having healthy romantic relationships among other things), religious activities, hobbies, extra curriculars, medical care of any kind, chores (also a skill/habit development thing and required by many parents), relaxation, and family time? Not to mention that your parents may or may not pressure you to get a job, or you might need to get one for economic reasons.Would you rather spend 7+ hours doing homework or about an hour copying it down?

    That’s what I thought.

  22. I don’t understand any of you teachers when you say “The brain is a huge muscle! You need to exercise it regularly!” Isn’t that what school is for? And aren’t the weekends for relaxing the brain, like a muscle? Either way, the brain works VERY differently than a muscle. When we want to remember something for a short moment, like carrying the one, it is stored in the prefrontal lobe of the brain. That is the area for SHORT TERM MEMORY. After the test, the brain dumps the information because it thinks it doesn’t need it anymore. And it’s right! When are you going to need to know when the Spanish colonized some island in the Caribbean later in life? Another issue is, when I get out of high school, I STILL WON’T BE QUALIFIED TO FLIP BURGERS AT MCDONALDS. Why aren’t we being taught important things about life? Why can’t we choose what classes we want to take? Homework doesn’t help with ANYTHING. SO GET RID OF IT.

Doing homework is a great skill and will also help you in college if you learn to complete it efficiently. The problem is that teachers are giving hours and hours of it, and there’s just no point in that. Sometimes I’ll get homework for classes that don’t need it at all. So my point is that homework is really helpful, but students really shouldn’t be getting more than two hours a night.

I don’t really like English work where you have to write out thousands and thousands of words, when you have got other, more important work to do. It can be really stressful; almost so stressful that death would be a more pleasurous happy thought. All homework should be completely terminated in English Class, it just gets to be too much. Teachers should offer us more important lessons and material than what they are today.
