So many readers have pointed me to an article in the Wall Street Journal How Homework Is Hurting Our Family by Jeff Opdyke that I’m posting it here. He begins:
I hate school!
Yes, I know that’s a bit immature for someone 41 years old. But it’s true. I hate school — so much so that my wife, Amy, and I have hired a college student to help our fifth-grade son manage his schoolwork a few times a week.
It’s not that we can’t do the work with him, or that we don’t want to. Just this evening we helped him study for a reading test, and over the weekend I was quizzing him on customary and metric units of measurement one day and biological definitions the next.
No, it’s that the volume of homework and tests that fill his docket is, in a word, ridiculous.I’m not sure when it happened, but at some point U.S. schools decided that if you can’t teach ’em, test ’em…or pile on more homework.
The result is that my son’s life — and by extension our family life — is a constant, stress-laden stream of homework and tests and projects. It overshadows everything we do, always hanging over our head. It affects our weekends, our meals, our vacations, our work time, our playtime, our pocketbooks.
And to what end? Maybe I’m missing something, but when did schools determine that the best place for kids to learn math, science and English is at their own kitchen table?

Obviously, learning is what school is about. I have nothing against homework or school projects or a certain level of anxiety about it all. How a student deals with those demands and that anxiety is great preparation for later life.
But the level of homework and anxiety my son deals with on a daily basis is well beyond anything healthy. And from talking to other parents, this problem is hardly unique to our family.
Amy and I knew there was a problem several weeks ago when our son brought home a D and a C. This was the first time that he earned anything less than a B. And then, a week later, another D.
At first we were mad. He’s just not paying attention to the questions; he’s rushing through the tests; he’s being careless. We quizzed him before the test and again afterward. How is it that he can know the information before and after, yet not during?
It turns out he’s stressed out. He told Amy that he wishes he could do better. But he already wakes up on school days between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., panicked that he doesn’t know the material he has already studied. He wakes up Amy to help him go over his notes one more time. He studies in the car on the way to school. Some nights he’s up past 10 p.m., writing, reading or memorizing. He spends parts of many weekends reading and doing projects.
Then he sees the Ds and Cs and gets dejected, wondering how he could possibly study any harder or any longer.
The truth is, he can’t. His childhood is already all but consumed by textbooks, notebooks and flashcards.

Compounding the problem, as Amy says, is that this barrage of schoolwork “is killing our family.” Amy says it makes her “feel like the worst mom in the world.” Here’s why: Many times our efforts to help our son lead to short tempers and blown fuses because at some point he simply has had enough of all this studying. He just wants to be outside on a Saturday, but he’s stuck inside on a project, or reciting the synonyms and antonyms to justify, villain and abandon.
One of Amy’s colleagues calls it the Bermuda Triangle, because first the child gets mad, then the parent helping gets mad, and then the parent listening to the meltdown gets mad.
Our four-year-old daughter gets caught up in this Bermuda Triangle as well, of course. Besides getting less focused attention from Mom and Dad, she picks up on all the angst. After a recent homework meltdown, she went up to her brother and said, “All you have to do is do your homework, and Mommy won’t be mad.”
Then there’s the effect on our jobs. I’m not saying work takes precedence over our son’s education. But let’s be realistic: At some point, the ability of Mom and Dad to keep the family clothed, sheltered and fed is relatively high on the Things To Do Today list. When I’m cutting interviews short to make a practice quiz, or Amy’s going to work late — or rising at 4 a.m. — to help him prepare for a test, something’s rotten with the system.
Perhaps the worst part is that many parents we’ve talked to are angry because they face the same issue. Some have felt compelled to put their elementary-age kids on medication for anxiety to cope with the stress of so much schoolwork. How insane that because of an overabundance of studying, prescribed as a way to prepare students for standardized tests that theoretically prove the schools are doing their jobs, kids are popping pills to keep jangled nerves in check.
Amy and I continue to help our fifth-grader nightly. He knows the material, but he continues to awaken early, worried about doing poorly. He continues to get burned out by the volume of homework he’s responsible for, and the family continues to creak under the weight of all the stress.
Beyond hiring someone to help our son — and, in effect, us — Amy is meeting with our son’s teachers to determine if there’s anything else we can do to help him manage his load. Something, we hope, has to work.
Stop Homework 
The culprit in all of this? Standardized testing, and students not caring about the testing.
Last year, our high school’s goal on the testing was an 82 (not percentage, I’m not sure how they grade it). We in the advanced and AP classes scored a 115 overall; the standard classes mustered a 63. The students in those classes have no incentive to do well, and the questions aren’t hard either. For example: A shirt that costs $20 is now on sale for 25% off. How much does it cost now?
And since we didn’t reach our goals, more homework and practice OERs should solve the problem, right?

emotionally frustrated kids and parents about homework is as harmful as doing anything else over doing it,like over eating,over exercising,over working anything that makes us over doing gives the result of injury physically or emotionally …what works for most persons won’t work with the same result for many others and the result is a total disaster.Maybe it’s better to be sure the student understood the working of the sum clearly could be parents misguided the working also in a different method and so on..should we parents go to school again cause even teachers has to refresh the curriculum each year!!!!

if we bake a cake every day we will get perfectionists in a short while and maybe we can make a good business out of our talent but for many others could work the opposite and make them so sick of cakes that they will close their eyes even when they see one..true or false life works this way?who dies with thirst and who dies with over drinking! is school any different from any other work or is the world suffering with people of different class,racism,fashioners,culture,grades,equal rights, are we put on a balance of life? yes we will never stop because life never works by the book..books should give ideas for example a book about pregnancy can guide us through our pregnancy but the book will not enter in each different emotions at different stages of our life’s. different in each one of us in all ages ..anyone can cheat his feelings to others and than we start to loose faith and we are in a simple war during this short beautiful life,gaining hate and more stress and headaches and even more cancer .we are silly because we choose to be perfectionists and we want everyone around us so..and who is perfect that is only in his thinking because for my opinion such human does not exist.

when we do what we struggled to be perfect in and aimed that profession let’s do it with emotion that is enthusiasm….
the smile that we carry shouldn’t be sarcastic and if we had a bad day let’s try to make it better not worse…..
enthusiasm should not be achieved for the pay check only but always.
In a difficult time we should seek true friends if they turn to you that’s a good sign….if we are smiling we should addict it to the ones around us and not keep it to ourselves should cost nothing..if you have enthusiasm at your work many others will copy and you are naturally helping to create a better perfect world and as we can’t wear a bracelet with one chain missing please try not to break the chain of life!!!

many people try to make a better way of living for the sake of our future! others just watch others go down the drain and enjoy….it’s not a matter of relaxing..eating,smoking,chatting are common relaxing moments in 2008.it’s a matter of concern about others not only ourselves….chew while you can and help while you can…it’s never too late but seems like the people who should take passes….parole si fatti no….

I go to bed every night at midnight or 1 am. i then wake up at 6 am. This is because I have so much homework to do. I am 13 years old and it isn’t right. I have basketball which makes it literally impossible to do anything. Homework is fine. But too much homework isn’t. I have at least 3-4 hours a night on top of basketball, and it is impossible for me to balance that time. But I do have straight as.

I hate homework. it takes over your life. We go to school to learn so why is it that when we get home we have to do it some more. Im 14 and i truly believe that i learn a lot more in lessons than i would of from doing all of my homework. I try my best at EVERY subject and im polite to all teachers. I admit, i dont get along with some teachers because…Well, some teachers are complete idiots. I have never done any homework in my entire life and yet i am in top sets for all the subjects i want to do for my GCSE’s. My motto is that you will never beat them, if you never try. So far this has convinced my maths teacher who said he was with me the whole way.

Man am I glad I don’t have it this bad. I’m in 7th grade (12 yrs old) and I rarely have more than 1 1/2 or 2 hours of homework a night. But I have to say, many teachers just assign homework because they think they have to live up to that first-day-of-school promise that “there WILL be homework every night!” And we have wayy too many artistic assignments that teach you nothing about what you’re learning, they teach you how to color and draw. It’s pathetic. I think that when teachers prepare lessons and homework assignments, they should constantly be questioning themselves: will this teach the students anything? What will they get out of this?

Nina, I agree with you, I wish more teachers would really think about how it will teach the students. You are very lucky though that you don’t have nearly as much homework as my 13 yr old daughter. She has hours of it and it’s ridiculous. She’s totally sleep-deprived and it’s just terrible. I hope you remain as lucky as you currently are!

Well,I didn’t really hate homework but loads and loads of homework which are too hard to do shouldn”t be given by teachers.And moreover it wastes my time for studies.Freaking homeworks……..

Nina, I’m in 6th grade and i recieve almost twice as much homework as you do :(.
Most of the homework i recieve is pretty much useless (in my opinion). Once in a while, I might get some fun project that I can enjoy. I don’t mind reviewing simple things like math formulas, simple problems, parts of speech (English) or grouping ideas, but what annoys me is that I’m always doing asignments that don’t benefit me at all. It’s all information that I already know. I really find essays/reports/reviews and other long writing pieces tedious. The only things they improve (barely) are my hand writing, spelling, or reviewing skills. Like many people have said before me, I like school. I just hate homework.

Homework totally sucks away all my free time. Time i could be outside playing sports, hanging out with my friends or just relaxing. Time i could be reading or spending time with my family.

Not so much. He preferred to tinker, create and imagine. Teachers told his mother little Thomas’ brain was addled and she pulled him out to homeschool. You should have known that, dear teacher. He and Albert Einstein are poster children for ADHD, brilliant, creative, and very right brained.

Besides the point. I fear you actually missed the whole point! Take me, for example. Take my first and early career. I was a whiz at what I did in I was a workaholic, I didn’t so much take work home as stay late in the office/studio. I was deeply committed and excited about my work, I ate, slept and drank it. I’m on to other things now but I still recall fondly those early years of my career.
I can tell you I wouldn’t have come out of school that hungry, that eager, that wide eyed if I’d had the homework load my daughter does. I wasn’t burned out. I come from a large family and we all played. A lot. It stoked my imagination and creativity. Play is not frivolous. As Maria Montessori said, “play is a child’s work.” It’s simple. Too much homework equals too little play. And our children are suffering the consequences today. Do read Richard Louv’s book, “Last Child in the Woods.”
I had much less homework during my schooled years. For one reason or another, I didn’t do all of it. Didn’t stop me from doing beautifully in that profession, won awards, made a name for myself.

Go write one. But do know that in this instance you meant “too,” not “to.” I’ll agree with you. My friend actually is coming out with a book on the destructive side of youth sports. But the coaches who push the kids hard, want the kids to be on top of their game 24/7 are the same ilk that would support YOU! It’s all part of the same zeitgeist.

Yes and no. I’ll agree with you but only to a point. We grownups have the experience and wisdom, they have the freshness and idealism of youth. Or did. Before you and others like you drummed it out of them. Together we could make a formidable team if schools weren’t so hell bent on ruining childhood in the name of adult preparation. We as adults make the decisions but we make a huge mistake when we do not tune into our children. Be still and listen sometimes. You’d be amazed at what you hear.

You actually think we don’ t like homework because we don’t want to be involved in our children’s education, we don’t want to “kill ourselves?” Dear teacher, you need to do YOUR homework and read some of our posts. I’ve said numerous times that I didn’t like homework in elementary (still don’t) because it deprived our family of all that after- school education we were so qualified to give her.
We wanted you to do school and we wanted to supplement and enrich at home. No, not more work, not worksheets, not more classes, not more sweating at a desk when she just did that all day in your classroom. You do your job, we’ll do ours. I’m talking museums, literature, current events and history discussions, nature centers, hikes, outdoor classical concerts, lectures at the library. And time for art, music and play.
Now go do your own homework, dear teacher. Read some of my posts, read FedUpMom and others, read Sara’s book, read Alfie Kohn, read Susan Ohanian, read Harris Cooper’s research, check out the Alliance for Childhood and then we can talk. I am a business student in Utah and I HATE THE HOMEWORK!!! My query is this, just how much homework does one need to actually complete in order to graduate? Are all of the 50 states as homework crazy as is Utah? Where do I sign to get the homework load reduced to an acceptable and agreeable level? We here in Utah have no time for a life!

Oh, how I hate homework, too. My two kids–one in HS, one in MS–are still up at 11:50 doing homework. Granted, there’s been some wasted time, not just tonight but over the last several weeks, but on top of 6.75 hours in school, plus commuting time, I don’t see how even 2 hours of homework at any grade (assuming that’s how long it actually takes for most kids) is healthy. And 4, 5 + hours even once is just plain wrong. MS child will get about 6 hours of sleep tonight. MS’ers need 9-10 hours. How attentive and productive will this one be at school tomorrow? On the bright side, this one actually enjoyed tonight’s work, which is a good thing since M has been at it for the better part of the last 9 hours. (That’s 9 hours SINCE arriving home.) HS child is another story and doesn’t know how to reverse the current trend. H will get about 5 hours of sleep tonight (assuming sleep comes easily) which means zoning in school tomorrow and difficulty focusing tomorrow night which means poor homework output which means more time to finish which adds up to more frustration and less sleep….And there’s no let up until standardized testing next month. Tonight H yelled at me, cursed life, slammed doors, went AWOL in the cold night for about 30 minutes (thank god for cell phones and texting), and wondered if ending it all would be better. [Please know we’re taking this seriously, although H assures us later that all the kids say stuff like this. Small comfort.]
Honestly, do most adults (or at least the adults who give homework and set policy) have jobs that ordeal is preparation for? Most nights are no where near this, but the stress has become a constant in our lives. It’s never really TGIF for the typical high-schooler, because TGIF only leads to HCIS (Holy Crap It’s Sunday). Do adults experience job stress anything near the level of stress we’ve all come to accept as an inherent part of our children’s education? The only job-related situations that I’m aware of that induce similar levels of fairly constant stress are sexual harassment, fear of losing one’s job and having an abusive boss. The resulting feelings of anxiety, lack of competence, hopelessness, and powerlessness are understandably overwhelming.
Schools and PTAs have come to accept high, even overwhelming levels of stress as facts of school life. They offer staff in-services, parent seminars, and other resources to help us all “deal” with it. If a similar percentage of adults were experiencing this level of stress on the job we’d be working to find ways to address the root causes. When adults have compulsory overtime, unfair though it might be, at least they are compensated. Isn’t overtime considered anything beyond 40 hours?
6 hours in classes plus 2 hours homework times 5 days equals 40 hours. Those are adult work hours. PE and art class count as students cannot opt out or go part-time.
MS and HS are now in bed, which is where I need to be so I can function effectively tomorrow. I have always been such a proponent of public education, and I can’t believe that I now find myself fantasizing about home-schooling, or finding and somehow affording a private school with an holistic philosophy. If only I didn’t have to work or could work from home. By the way, it’s Wednesday night, hump night! I hope tomorrow is a slow day. TGIF is just around the corner. And my boss doesn’t give weekend homework. Not ever.

I couldn’t have said it better!! I too have one child in HS and the other in MS, it’s now almost midnight, and both are still up doing HW!! It’s ridiculous, and instead of inspiring creativity, it’s burning them out and making them hate work, long before they’re a part of the work force… They are SO tired, which as you noted, makes it difficult to absorb new material in school, and so the vicious cycle continues! Stop the world– I want to get off!!!

It seems to me the cleverer kids that go to better schools get punished with more work. Sometimes it makes me so depressed, I come home on a Friday and plan all my homework. I remember when I was back at my old school and I had time to play about with my friends, surely a childhood is for having fun!
Nice to know that this boy’s parents are on side. I think you should be writing notes to school, simply saying how homework is ruining his social and family life. Make sure you don’t push him too much, that’s the worst thing you can do.

geez…i was doing my homework…and then i got real pissed…so i read this…and i totally agree with u guys…we’ve got a life, peoples! just wrecks your family life…my mum gets all stressed outabout my sister’s work…and then there’s the mountain that i have…this homework thing just cuts short your life by twenty years due to anxiety according to me!!!

teachers dont get that homework is NOT good for you. what you learn through homework is how to rip it up…tear it apart…swear at it…and hate it!!! and you dont have time to prepare for your exams. AND THE BLAME GOES TO HOMEWORK!!!!

oh my gosh. i am in seventh grade and i get so much homework!!! we have tests way to much, have pop quizzes, and get about two hours of homework each night.. and it is only the third week of school! what is this? we have also already had two projects we had to do. i have had NO free time, and i have spent almost all my time studying and doing work. i had to turn down an invite to the movies on a saturday night, and i couldn’t help with a birthday party (and i would have been paid!)

Whoever wrote this I’m so with you actually I was in the middle of studying for a big english test and all my homework is piled up next to me. Homework has taken over my life and I’m in 6th grade!! You know how when you get home you have a little worksheet to do Not me I have at least 3 subjects to do at home.You know when you get home from a 7 hr. school day and you want to relax? Well not me It’s just like school at home you never get a break from it.!!! I hate school just as much as you do!!!!!! U r lucky u r out of school I have alot more years ahead of me.

I am very glad that I am not unique in this situation as well. I am a single parent and my daughter is in a private school in Fourth grade. The same private school my mother and myself went to. I do not recall my parents having to be by my side from the time homework starts to the time homework finishes. I am so frustrated every evening. Now I am looking at every web site possible, to figure out if there is something wrong with me. I feel like the worse parent in the world because I get so frustrated and I am not sure how the teacher explains it, then I have to turn around and try not confuse my daughter any further. Fourth grade homework has been a nightmare to say the least and it’s only been 2 months. Homework has made me feel like both my daughter and I are incompetent. I am searching Sylvan and Kumon websites trying to figure out which would be best for my daughter daily. Adding yet, another daunting task to her homework duties, just to make sure she can keep up. Who cares about grades! You can have straight A’s and still not get into a top University. Homeschool students have no grades and more and more of them are being admitted to top Universities everyday.
Read the books you want. Study thing that interest you and work on a project of your own choosing. Have fun too!

Yeah, decided to search for things like this… I have to do homework right now, in fact. This is the first break I’ve had all night, though. I wonder if that says something… Plus, my mom JUST came in my room, and asked what I was doing, and I told her, and she said that she doesn’t think I have too much homework. Then explain how this is the first break I’m taking at NINE-O’-FRICKING-CLOCK AT NIGHT!? My mother is blind to how much stress I’m under right now. I have two projects in History, two in English, and another in Psychology, all at once, not to mention that I just did some work for all of it and finished my math homework. My parents don’t get that I’m under a lot of stress! I have heard of parents who went to school boards and got things cleared up, but oh, no! Not my parents!

I agree with that homework is sometimes overwhelming and exahusting to do.However, being a student myself it has taught me some valuable skills in life, like never leaving anything for the last minute if you have time right now. If I was a teacher I would assign students homework ONLY from Mon – Thurs and not during the weekend, which is supposed to be relaxation and family bonding
I know in college you get fewer homework and more tests, which some teachers try to prepare you for by giving you a ton of homework. On the other hand, me being in high school many teachers are giving us this homework, which dosen’t allow us to study for Ap tests or the SAT, which will determine the college we go to. This is ridiculous, since the teachers are trying to prepare us for college, with the risk of us going to a crappy(excuse my language) college.

Do the parents that hate homework and question their children’s teachers so readily challenge all professionals in their lives this way? Do you challenge doctors on what the diagnosis is because you used WebMD? Do you insist on antibiotics when the doctor says its a virus, because you know your child and he/she is in pain? Do you question the attorney who prepared your estate documents about their recommendations? Do you tell the dentist to pull the other tooth? Do you tell the engineer how to build the bridge you drive across on your commute because you watched a Discovery Channel show? I am just curious if this phenomenon is reserved for teachers. If so, why? Please enlighten me.
