Is Homework Ban the Beginning of a National Revolution?
Yesterday, the CBS Nightly News picked up the story of the homework ban at The Oak Knoll Elementary School in Menlo Park, California, and asked whether Oak Knoll is at the forefront of a homework revolution. I hope so. After a short ad, you can watch the story here.

Yes I beleive it should be a revolution. I am a student myself and do not belive in homework.

I disagree with teachers giving out homework. The definition of homework from the encyclopaedia refers to tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed mostly outside of class, and derives its name from the fact that most students do the majority of such work at home. If a teacher gives out homework the teacher is obviously not doing a good job teaching. A sign that you have too much homework is if you hate school. Homework steals time out of a student’s day that could better be spent. I think homework should be banned because it affects kids negatively because kids get stressed out; not all kids are capable of doing homework and homework overload is also affecting their family life.

Immature rantings of kids (who just don’t want to do homework) aside, I hate that my first-grader is in school for seven hours and then on top of that there is at least an hour of homework (usually a math sheet and some chapter-book reading). So he’s home around three-thirty, done with homework around four-thirty or five, then it’s dinner time. Then he has about an hour of playtime before he has to get ready for bed.
Reading homework?? I love to read to my son, and I have my OWN selection of books from which I want to read. So now our reading time is forcibly doubled — or I have to give up our personal reading time so that he’s not behind in his school reading group. As for the math homework, I can understand that they want to give us an idea of what and how they are learning in the classroom, but a quick memo or a look at completed schoolwork does that.
And this is first grade. What will it be like in the future? Will we have any time together at all on a school night? Granted, bedtimes will be later, but kids need down time.
If my son ever threw up on a book just because of stress – as described elsewhere – I would seriously consider home-schooling. And I DON’T want to home-school!!

Tricia, maybe, but not in kindergarten. There should be NO homework in kindergarten. The risk is too great, the benefits too little. The risk is simply not merited.
The teacher’s main reason is not to inspire and create a lifelong learner, but to get ready for first grade. This endless obsession of treating school as merely a stepping stone to the next level is to quote the above, beyond absurd.
The teacher looked young. It may be she just doesn’t know. I hope a volley of comments will cause her to rethink her position. If she has no children, some day when she does, she’ll cringe in horror, we hope, when she looks back at her ignorance of homework and its damaging effects.

I think homework should be limited down to a lower amount because I have spoken with many people that are well into their careers and have commented me on the amount of homework that my teachers have assigned. Increasing the amount of homework does not bring up national standards unless every student always has a personal tutor at all times of assignments.

This is fucking stupid. I am a ninth grader in high-school and just to be brief, homework is absolutely terrible. There is not one normal human being that remotely likes homework. If your an adult, don’t bother trying to respond with something like, “LOL YEZ THER ISZ R U KRAIZ-EE”. The only thing homework does is cause a load of stress and make people wish they weren’t born. Something I noticed nowadays is that adults don’t know SHIT. Adults think they know their children and how adolescents act but the truth is, THEY DON’T KNOW FUCKING SHIT. My mom barely knows anything about me after 14 years of living together which I might add is pretty sad. I find it appalling America is run by fat obese old hippos. Every politician is an old fuck, and if old people don’t know jack shit about what youth want how can they ever hope to make this country better. Now, obviously we can’t have everything we want or anything too radical but for FUCKS SAKE, why should we have to go WORK at a Inshitution of Learningnothing for the whole god forsaken day, only to come home which is our haven to do MORE WORK? I appreciated you comments. I feel like teachers use large amounts of work as an insurance policy in case their state test scores come back with poor ratings. The principals simplistic solution would, among other questions, no doubt be “So you gave the same amount of homework as the other teachers?”
I would hate to be the teacher that would have to say “No”, thus the homework keeps going home.
Are you in a position to homeschool? That is the only thing that was left to us here in Central California. But I know that is a big step emotionally and financially for many families – though it was the calmest time of our lives so far.

Homework is one of school’s most controversial aspects, and is where teachers and students can converge and have an interesting debate. In this essay I am going to express my thoughts on why homework should be banned. One of the reasons that will be talked about in this essay is about physical activity, and how it is being lessened because of this homework issue.
One of the first reasons that homework should be banned is that homework is cutting down our exercise time which is making obesity become an epidemic. As kids spend more time doing their homework, they are less able to go outside and get some exercise. Also, because of the stress that so much homework brings, kids have to find something to release their stress on, in this case that something being food. It would be much easier for us to get exercise if we didn’t have to worry about all this homework that is sometimes assigned as due the next day.
The second reason is that sometimes we get more homework than the amount we need. My sixth grade teacher would say time and again that, “I would rather give you 5 problems and have you get them all correct, than give you 50 and have you get them all wrong.” This is true because sometimes we get more homework than the amount we need, even if we already understand the concept. As past teachers have said, “Practice makes perfect,” is perfection achieved through 50 or more math problems?
Overall, homework descends a negative impact on kids. When Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, authors of, “The Case Against Homework”, were asked if doing homework really could have a negative impact on a kids’ health, they answered that because homework involves sitting down and not doing much action, it really actually has the same impact as watching television. So, “Is it just coincidence that childhood obesity, diabetes, and other health problems have steadily increased along with homework loads?” Nowadays, homework is done in order to simply complete it, which takes away from real study time that we can be taking advantage of.

Homework makes kids hate learning. I think that children would have a much better time at school, and have much more time to do more important things at home. Homework doesn’t make you learn, its honestly usually just busy work. It supposedly makes a kid responsible, but its gone too far. There are many other things that a kid has to do that require responsibility. I think our youth would be loads happier if there were more bans on homework.

homework is not neccessary; e.g. maths, homework is pointless, you learn it and they tell your to learn it again after school, (why learn what you already know) and the next day you still learn about the same thing and it repeats over and over again, until you start a new subject.
It wastes our time for relaxation, we spend 6-7 hours at school…isnt that enough for them…NO!
They shove more and more at us…my plan, they give us a chance to choose not to do homework, if we fail and suck at school when u graduate, you can go and research on your own or if you graduate with out doing homework(like me), try to get it banned for good….SAY NO TO HOMEWORK

As much as I disliked homework when I was in school, I did respect that it was to discipline me for post-high school. We are in an a fast-paced information age that it is not acceptable to make mistakes, when making mistakes are where some of the most valuable lessons are learned.
I think homework should be made optional, except for large projects which encourage group participation. If the student does the homework consistently then it might reflect on their final mark as a bonus. This would encourage students that have difficulties in the classroom environment, but can work alone better, to go for these extra marks. Because they would be wanting to do this, they would naturally become better at it.
As far as spelling goes, I think teachers should be encouraged by parents to correct all spelling mistakes. Spelling is a foundational stepping stone to any language. If children don’t understand the basics of spelling and grammar when they are young, it will be very difficult for them to understand in their later years. Up to and including grade 6, teaching spelling should be necessary and it should be corrected at all levels of education.

OMFG, I hate homework sooo much. It is so undescribable, how much I hate it. If I had to pick something that I hated the absolute most in the world, it’d be homework, no doubt! And it’s just been getting worse and worse over the years. School used to be somewhat bearable and fun, but now it seems as though I just wake up and drone myself to school only to deal with classes and get an hour or two of homework from each. Math is the worst. I work as hard as I can, all my lunchtimes (which are inappropriately short), to finish as much homework as I can. And I have Math at the end of the day, and before you know it, I then have 30 extra-long questions to go and completely ruin my weekend. And trying to get them all done just ruins any chance at having a respectable weekend for me. Weeknights suck because I get so worked up over the amount of homework I have! Homework drains me emotionally to the point where I snap at the people I love, and feel like crying it’s so goddamn terrible. I get so much homework in a day, it’s not even funny. I could deal with a few simple questions, maybe five, but not 30 math questions, 2 stupid worksheets for Foods, a 7 page booklet on Charles II, reading 6 short stories and then summarizing them, and reviewing a basketball worksheet for gym. Homework has made me completely and utterly hate school and dread having to go everyday. It’s come to the point where I might drop out (though I don’t even think I have the nerves to do that). All I know is that if the amount of homework keeps climbing and this crap keeps going on in the future years, there isn’t a chance in hell my children are going to public school. Also, elementary school. They used to be good for homework. You wouldn’t get any and if so, a little. Now, it’s terrible. My little brothers, both 8, get more homework than I got in grade 10. Currently, they’ve been assigned a project in French to make a life sized paper cut out of a human body, proceed to label it French and English, and the write a one hundred word blurb on each little bone and organ in both French and English, and then write a speech in French and English to then present it in front of their class for 10 minutes, all under a week and a half, and they only get 20 minutes of class time each day to work on it, the rest having to be done at home, without parent, teacher, sibling, or electronic (translation) help. It’s got to be completely colored and everything’s got to be up to the nitpick of a teacher’s standard, which is terribly high. And they’re eight! They just want to play! And it’s 70% of their final grade! So if they fail this, they’ll be forced to do a week or two of summer school. The My brothers have been exhausted each night, and my one brother actually broke out in tears he was so done with it! For the first four days, they did well. Good kids. The day consisted of them getting up at six in the morning, going to school for 6-7 hours, then coming home at 4:00 only to have to go directly to their project, working from 4:10 to 9 or 10, even 11 or 12 at times, at night. Eventually, on the third day, I decided that they shouldn’t have to put up with this. I decided that they should just worry about actually getting some sleep. Seriously, they were getting on 2-3 hours of sleep because they were so worked up that they couldn’t actually fall asleep. My parents were done with it too. All my brothers would do was cry they were so done with it, and they aren’t usually whiny kids, either. I ended up doing the rest of the project for them, only to have their god-awful teacher call my parents in saying that she believed that they cheated. After a nice long talk with my parents, she decided to ultimately omit they from the project, and decided they’d have to do a whole bunch full of extra credit just to pass. I had the same teacher for Grade 3, and she’s absolutely appauling with her unruly expectations of these poor eight year olds. These kids are all so worn out and then she likes to give them all this homework. For the rest of those days, they proceeded to get the regular 15 question a day math homework, 30 socials questions, 10 science, and a whole whack more that I can’t even list off. They were so stressed out by it, that I ultimately told them to leave it to me because they didn’t deserve it. Then, my 3 little sisters thought that I’d do all their homework for them, because they too got a reasonable amount. I just wanted my little sisters and brothers to have fun, so I ended up easily quadrupling my homework amount by doing theirs for them because it’s just not fair for them to have that sickly insane result. All I know is that homework should be ban completely and I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATTTTEEEEE it!!!!

Homework stresses me to death; school should be for learning while home should be for mental rejuvenation.
if adults work 8 to 9 hours a day and dont usually bring home work from their job why cant we have the same amount of time to help us cope with the stresses of modern society pressing in on us while we are in our growth stages of our life. Instead of mentaly exhausting us let us be prepared with the mental strength and stability for school the next day.honestly is really that hard to adjust courses to fit an 8 hour day to teach students material in a balanced stress relieving format?

I’ll do anything to not go to school, heck I’d do anything for homework to be Banned! I can’t take it anymore!!! I mean, I have more important things then this then to be sitting in front of textbooks and finding about Henry the Eight or Finding stupid pictures on the Internet for Art Class!, if it continues I think I might drop out from school!!! id like to talk a little about me about me now
I am a Freshman in highschool
i got straight A’s till sixth grade when i began to develope deep stomach pain and an unkown anxiety.I began to hate school to death. their was days i was so anxious that i would have to call my parents to pick me up the minute i got to school.i finally homeschooled but to no avail i started getting behind in my homework on my online homeschooling,my stress level was so high i would punch my self at night and cry my eyes out
till i fell asleep my parents brought me to a doctor and i was diagnosed with O.C.D(obsessive compulsive disorder)
my mind was completely scrambeled with fears that the normal person would find completly unnescessary,NOW YOU MAY WONDER WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH HOMEWORK PLEASE KEEP READING.
i finally straitened things out with the help of a phsychyotrist and proceded in to my freshmen year of highschool, things are still not the same as before ,bnut i manage, but homework is immense but after school with my disorder is worse .i need my time to rejuvenate from a day worth of bullies and work .i just cant do homework or i swear ill go insane i need 3 studie halls a day just to get homework done so now i am missing out on full educational potential .i need time especially after school to recharge so to speak my mind so i dont go crazy i am on so much medication i cant even tell you .the point of this story is “AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY THEIR IS SCHOOL SHOOTINGS”NOW DONT WORRY ABOUT ME I AM COMPLETELY SANE AND WOULD NEVER THINK OF DOING SUCH AN AWFUL THING ,I AM JUST MAKEING A POINT ABOUT MY VIEW OF STRESSED OUT STUDENTS AND THE LINK WITH HOMEWORK.

When I got into middle school, I learned how hard homework was. I was spending ALL my time on homework I had to wake up at 5:30 im the morning just to finish it. I feel like a wreck every day, because I can’t get enough sleep on the weekends. My life is becoming a wreck. I am nervous all the time and I feel sick alot. I can’t say the last time I have had a friend over on the weekends because I have been trying to sleep. Homework is unneccarssary. I am sorry for the mispelling, but I am tired. Hopefully over vacation I can relax and see a friend or two.

Homework is gay. I am in all honors classes and I don’t do any homework at home. If I do not finish homework at school I just don’t do it. So now I’m getting pretty much straight c’s. When earlier in life I got straight a’s, but that was when we got about 10 minutes of homework each day. Now though, I am getting about 3 projects a week. My dad starting yelling at me about not turning homework in last year, and im starting to get really stressed about not getting good grades and my dad yelling at me. I wish that teachers had to do all the homework they gave to us, and see how stressed they would be. Homework has taken much away from my life, and I’m done with it. Also when will I use geomotry in my life. Oh nevermind I use it for algebra 2 then algebra 2 for trig then trig for calc, but will I use calc for????? Homework is bs. I get A’s on all my tests, but I get bad grades because homework. If I’m showing I know what I’m doing on a test, then why do I have to do homework? And all you people that are saying we are using bad grammar and spelling stfu it’s the Internet not a fucking formal letter

I have taken a survey from some of my classmates in my homeroom and the data shows that we spend 11 hours and 30 minutes doing work related things and 2-3 hours doing things not related to work. This does not include studying for tests. We have at least 1 assessment/test/quiz ect. weekly. I have 1/6 of my spanish final on monday and my Math final (which my teacher grades EXTREMELY harsh on) on the same day. We only have 3 days now to study for these huge tests.(we were only notified about the math final today, thursday) Most people in my school agree that we all wouldn’t mind school if there was no homework. It also puts a lot of stress on me. I have been sick since January. It’s June and I haven’t fully recovered yet because of the absurd amount of homework.

Dear Ashley–
What do you do? Please talk to your parents or another caring adult about your feelings. Or please take a look at the suicide hotline website, suicidehotlines.com, and call the number for your state. You shouldn’t have to feel so alone. Or write to me privately and I’ll see if I can help you figure out some other ways of getting help. My email is sara@stophomework.com.

Ashley, please, don’t hurt yourself. Ask someone for help. There are many people who post to this site who care about you, though we’ve never met you. Try to find someone you can talk to, and if you can, post back and let us know how you’re doing.
And you should know that there are many people who are very concerned about the stress that our kids are experiencing and we are working to change the situation.
Please take care of yourself. Your mental health is more important than school, more important than grades, more important than what college you might go to or how much money you might make. Depression is a terrible illness.
I will be thinking of you. Don’t feel alone.

I am divided three ways on this:
As a former student, I don’t particularly like homework. I did, however accept it as a reality, and I did it – or I didn’t do it and just braved the consequences. I did not, however, rebel against it.
As a teacher, I see the need for skills to be practiced outside of class – to give the student a chance to do this on their own. To that end I will say that homework is inevitable, and banning ALL of it is unlikely, and even undesirable. However, I agree that there is a problem with excessive homework, given out by teachers for various reasons: Some subjects are just difficult and require a lot of work. But then some teachers have a need to be known as a hard teacher (which people often mistakenly equate with being a good teacher) or, as others have said, they simply want to cover their asses in case admin check in on them.
My own philosophy is “work smarter. not harder” – and I do assign homework myself. It isn’t daily, though, and basically I treat it for what it is – practice. I correct it for errors, but homework is not weighted heavily in the grade. The majority of the grade is based on formal assessments. Does this mean that some students won’t do it? Sure, but then some students don’t need as much practice. In the end, it isn’t a matter of how much ‘work’ they’ve done, it’s a matter of what they know, and what they can do.
Lastly, as a parent of a toddler, I fear what my son is going to experience when he gets to middle school and high school. He will be expected to do far more than I ever was – and I’m not sure he will be the better for it. Yes, I want him to put in a good effort, and yes I want him to fare well academically. I do not want him to sacrifice the benefits of youth for the sake of performance paranoia. Understand that he will do homework, and I plan on being there to monitor that and even help him when necessary – but we will also need family time, and he will need time for himself, his interests and his friends – because the last thing I want is a high-performing robot with a messed-up sense of self because he didn’t get a childhood.

To CA Teacher:
Fifty years ago, kids were still subjected to corporal punishment in school. It was an accepted method of handling child behaviour. But it changed. Why did it change? I’m sure that there were teachers back in 1955, who were quite sure that whacking a kid would be an acceptable practice for as long as she was a teacher. But it changed.
That’s why I cannot accept what you said….
As a teacher, I see the need for skills to be practiced
outside of class – to give the student a chance to do
this on their own. To that end I will say that
homework is inevitable, and banning ALL of it is
unlikely, and even undesirable.
There are lots of educators, and parents and millions of students who are saying homework is a useless waste of time. It damages family relationships, it deprives children of sleep, play and free time and has no bearing on how they do in school tomorrow, let alone 5 years down the road. It’s as damaging (see post above) as the strap was in some cases…
It will change…and I hope it does for your toddler.

Here in Brazil, daily we get about 72 exercises to do from all subjects, now some of them(Phisics and math),take about 2 hours to do 24 exercises and they must be done with the internet on,because they are so hard to do,you would have to take even more classes if ou didn’t use the internet.
I don’t hate homework,i just hate the fact you are given too much that in the end will flood your head and you won’t learn a thing and get stressed.

There’s a difference between homework and studying, and I’m on board with banning rote homework. I don’t know if it’s the beginning of it, but we sure as hell need a REVOLUTION! We need to dump this antiquated system and rebuild from the ground up, realizing that it will always be in flux as our society, culture, and technology is, and that the system needs to adjust to it accordingly. There is one thing that seems to remain the same though: human development. Yet developmental appropriateness seems to be the last thing to be considered in all of what I’ve seen in my four kids’ public education!

I’m fine with homework. It’s extra practice at home to give teachers more time to teach at school and to reinforce lessons. But if you’re going to assign homework, then at least make it relevant! For goodness’s sake, teachers, please don’t assign more than 20 min. of the same stuff– especially when students have 5+ periods a day. I appreciate the concern teachers have for students, but pulling all-nighters while I’m already half asleep do not help. And if you assign something, then please, please check it. I BS my homework a lot. It makes me lazy.

Personally, I despise homework. I have netball and basketball everyday of the week, except one. On that day that I have to do my homework, it takes me about four hours to complete! (I’m seriously not exaggerating) Our school says 30 minutes a night is enough to finish our homework. But at the standard they require? No way.
I don’t mind a little bit of homework, but the teachers give WAY too much. Is it an actual law or something for the teachers to give us homework? If I ever became a teacher, I’d never give my students homework. There’s way to much pressure for everything anyways…

If homework really is a necessity I think schools need some kind of stricter rubric as for the actual content, competencies and demands for each homework so they are actually a productive work. (i.e. when you have to answer questions and answers from a book, don’t you think it’s a waste of time and energy to have to copy all the questions on looseleaf, rather than just your answers? I’ve wasted many, many hours of my life just copying by hand…) People complain about homework because, guess what geniuses, IT REALLY DOES WASTE YOUR TIME. There are so many homeworks that I feel like they were a total freaking waste of time, and I didn’t learn anything from them (or anything useful).
Teachers should know well enough to give GOOD homeworks, not just ANY homework because they’re supposed to give it.

Giving me more homework isn’t going to improve my writing as much as simply proofreading what I wrote before posting. Give me a break.

90% of it is busywork. Pure busywork. I learn more at home surfing the internet than I learn from homework, possibly even along with school. They say it reinforces learning, but it doesn’t. All we want to do is get our homework done so we can savor the precious 20 minutes. of free time we have. After that, we forget about all the things that we learn. And as soon as I get to school, happy homework is temporarily over, the teacher says “Alright, tomorrow we are having a test. Study hard.” No warnings or anythings. I’m exaggerating a little bit, but I’m trying to prove my point. So on top of our regular homework we have to make flash cards and study until 3 AM. Then, up at 6 to cram as much studying in before leaving for school behind heavy eyelids. Arrive, and fail the test because your brain isn’t working because of lack of sleep and REAL mental stimulation. People say that homework is mental stimulation, but it isn’t. Mental stimulation is things we choose to learn. All homework teaches us is that adults don’t care. There are a few that do (bless them), and are on our side in the debate against homework. Adults mean well. They want to watch us go off to good colleges, and want to see that neat line of A’s on our report cards. There is something satisfying about that to them, seeing that they have raised their children to be intelligent and hard working. In one respect, they have. But they never ask what we think about it, because they assume we feel the same satisfaction to know that our hard work on homework pays off. In a way, it is satisfying. But only for a few moments. Then we are thrown into the next quarter, where the pressure cooker turns right back on, perhaps hotter than ever. Suddenly that line of A’s and B’s means nothing. They’re just simple letters on a piece of paper meant to represent our intelligence, printed in ink and written formulaically Which is what they are. We won’t remember that report card in a few years. We’ll only remember the homework and tears, the way we stayed up all night doing a report on a famous composer we don’t even know the name of now. I’m writing this to all the adults that come across this website. Is this how you want us to remember our youth and childhood?

Homework isn’ t that bad. Those who say it is may need to find some balance in their life. Others may just have a bad teacher. I believe that homework should never be more than an hour, and honestly some kids probably spend more time watching pointless TV than that so it shouldn’t be interfering too much. And for those who say homework sucks, I have sympathy.

it took a long time to ban corporal punishment in schools.
it took a long time to ban forcing left handed kids to write with their right hand in schools.
it took a long time to ban 1/2 day school on Saturday.
It may still take some time to ban homework because the same unenlightened mindset of the pro corporal punishment and no lefthanders teachers and parents are still around.
forcing kids to WORK at home while us adults relax is nothing short of modern child slavery.
a visonary leader is required to stop this child abuse.
ordinary people just dont get it.
child centric?

I thought people pay good money for TEACHers to teach us, not for them to waste money on paper and force kids to learn at home.
So many teachers say that we need to get outside more, but how can we when we have to stay inside getting a sore gluteus maximus doing homework!

I absolutely hate Homework, most high school students have a job, so they find it hard to fit in homework, sport/recreational activities, sleep & a small amount of free time. School takes over our lives. They decide what we wear.
Put an end to homework now.

Since when to people “pay good money” for teachers to teach? Last I checked, public education was FREE (notwithstanding the minimal tax dollars that are collected, which definitely do not cover a teacher’s salary). On average, teachers get paid anywhere between 32,000-40,000/year, which if you divide it up between the number of hours per day they spend in the classroom only (and NOT including their own prep work time) and number of students per class, equals out to be about $3/hour.
I am seeing LAZY written all over this last post. I played football, basketball, and baseball, worked 15 hours per week in high school, was an honor roll student and always did my homework and had plenty of free time for whatever I wanted to do on the weekends.
Whoever told you all that life is fun and games and relaxation must live in some backwoods hippy compound. You need to WORK to have nice things in life, sometimes more than you get paid salary to do. If your laundry is piled up are you going to neglect it because “this is your time to relax”? The American society has turned into lazy complainers. Period.
No, not all homework is meaningful or enjoyable, and maybe teachers should rethink the kind of homework they are sending home. But I do many things everyday that are a hassle and things that I don’t like because its a part of LIFE.

I wake up in the morning, trying not to fall asleep in the shower. I drag my sorry ass to school just to do a shitload of work. Then I go home, hoping to get a break and chill out from a long tough day at school, only to find I have a pile of homework waiting for me.
I never ASKED to go to school. I never ASKED for homework, I never ASKED to learn stuff I’ll never use for the rest of my life…
So why the hell do I have to do it.

.Why Homework Should Be Ended.
.
# 1: Homework has little educational worth and adds nothing to the time spent in school. Some schools and some countries don’t bother with homework at all, and their results do not seem to suffer from it. Studies show that homework adds nothing to standardised test scores for primary/ elementary pupils. International comparisons of older students have found no positive relationship between the amount of homework set and average test scores. If anything, countries with more homework got worse results ! .
#2 : Homework is almost always done when a child is already tired from a long day at school. As a result few students are at their best when they sit down in the evening to yet more work. Homework ends up being done in a hurry, by students fighting fatigue, and poor quality work is produced. Worse still, students who have been up late trying to finish off their homework, then come tired into school the next day, and so are less ready to learn. Really, what is the point? .
#3: Setting homework does little to develop good study skills. It is hard to check whether the homework students produce is really their own. Some students have always copied off others or got their parents to help them. But today there is so much material available on the internet that teachers can never be sure. It would be better to have a mixture of activities in the classroom which help students to develop a whole range of skills, including independent learning.
#4: Homework produces large amount of pointless work of little educational value, but marking it ties up much of teachers’ time. This leaves teachers tired and with little time to prepare more effective, inspiring lessons. The heavy workload also puts young graduates off becoming teachers, and so reduces the talent pool from which schools can recruit.
#5: omework puts students off learning. Studies have shown that many children find doing homework very stressful, boring and tiring. Often teachers underestimate how long a task will take, or set an unrealistic deadline. Sometimes because a teacher has not explained something new well in class, the homework task is impossible. So children end up paying with their free time for the failings of their teachers. They also suffer punishments if work is done badly or late. After years of bad homework experiences, it is no wonder that many children come to dislike education and switch off, or drop out too early.
#6: Homework takes a lot of time up. Being young is not just about doing school work. It should also about being physically active, exploring the environment through play, doing creative things like music and art, and playing a part in the community. The time spent doing homework could be used to get a part time job, do chores, and participate in sports. It is also important for young people to build bonds with others, especially family and friends. These activities are all much more productive than doing homework. Merely prolonging the school day does not improve knowledge acquisition, but it does prevent the student from doing all of the other things that a young person’s life is supposed to be about.
#7: Homework is a class issue. In school everyone is equal, but at home some people have advantages because of their family background. Middle-class families with books and computers will be able to help their children much more than poorer ones can. This can mean working class children end up with worse grades and more punishments for undone or badly done homework. On the other hand pushy parents may even end up doing their kids’ homework for them – cheating. And homework is one of the most common causes of family arguments.
#8: Homework is not given because it is neccesary for learning: Rather, it is given because it is a tradition. Teachers do not assign homework because a certain lesson is important enough to continue at home, they have already decided that children have to do something at home every night, and they decide later what that something should be. This results in less productive assignments that have very little, if any, educational value. Whether or not they need it, most children come home with a backpack full of homework.
#9: Homework is given out far to much, often for no reason. Homework should only be assigned when a student does not finish their classwork, or when they must study for a test. Outside of these situations, homework is pointless work that often just puts kids off learning.

It causes too much stress for the student! The students don’t even learn anything as most of the time homework consists of countless questions. And I believe that time outside of school is time for what the student wants to do.

what i have notice is that homework is no longer homework, in fact most my homework is a lesson we didn’t get done during class, Do you know how many times i didn’t get my homework done because i didn’t how to do it and the teacher says “you should have payed attention to the lesson” even though the homework was the lesson. I get homework in EVERY subject besides study hall totaling up to around 3-4 hours a night. And most of the homework is worksheet that we do the NEXT class. Also i barley have anytime to get my homework done, i have to get up at 5:30 am every day to get my stuff set up, eat breakfest, freshin up then i leave for school at 6:30 and i get there at 7:30 and im at school until 3:30 then i leave and i get home at 4:30 and i have to do chores which usually take around 45 mins and i eat dinner at 6:00 and eating dinner takes around a hour then i take a shower and that takes around 20 min and i finish at around 7:30 and i have only around 2 hours to get 4 hours of homework done. so i don’t have time. also homework counts as 50% of my grade so i have to do it but since i don’t have time, im failing 2 of my classes. and they blame me for it.
