In a survey conducted by AskKids and released in late August, 43 percent of parents admitted to having done their kids’ homework. According to the Los Angeles Times, here’s what the survey found:
Forty-three percent of parents queried in a survey this month admit to doing their children’s homework at least once to ease the strain. Almost half the dads, 47%, owned up to doing the homework, while 39% of mothers did so.
Kids who hope to persuade (con?) parents into doing homework have a better shot if mom and dad are older. Of parents 18-24, 33% say they’ve done their children’s homework for them, compared with 45% of 25- to 44-year-old parents.
The survey of 778 parents, conducted for the homework resource website Ask Kids, showed that 84% of parents help with homework — more with math and English than with other subjects.
The survey was conducted by Kelton Research using an e-mail invitation and an online survey. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
If parents stopped helping their kids with homework (or doing it for them), teachers would have to stop giving it, or, at the very least, cut back on the amount. It’s a rare elementary school child who can manage homework without a lot of parental involvement and help. Just imagine what would happen if parents got together and stopped asking their children whether they had homework, stopped helping them do it, and stopped making sure that the homework made its way back to school. A little homework disobedience anyone?
Stop Homework 
You people are so stupid your just to lazy to sit down with your child and help them do their homework its not that difficult my mom sat down with me every single night and she would watch me do my homework and now I do my Homework all by myself without her telling me too. Kids need homework because it helps the teacher understand who’s understanding the lesson and who isn’t and if you don’t appreciate the teacher taking the time out to go find a homework sheet to see if your child understands it then you are pathetic. Also if you are in High School like me homework helps bring up your grade, but its up to the student to take the time out and do it. I go to a private High School where I get probably five hours of homework every night I’ve stayed up until 2 in the morning studying for finals. It only gets worse as your kids get older you should be thankful for the easy math or vocab sheets that only take an hour all together. And don’t try and say oh my child doesn’t have the patients to sit down for an hour and do homework well then he could do one sheet and take a break and then do another sheet. So to all you people on this site that think homework needs to be abolished I hope you understand that that will never happen so suck it up because it only gets harder!!!!!

Wow…the next generation of dependent adults being created by whiny dependent parents…when and how do you think your little dependents will become successful adults who actually learn to manage assigned tasks in a timely manner. Stay healthy co-dependent moms because your kids will be living in the basement and need your “interventions” for a long time. No wonder other societies are passing us up! Those parents actually have expectations for children.

I think school should be optional.Yes it is in our best interest yada yada yada, but if we don’t want to be educated we shouldn’t have to be.Most kids would probably still go to school, but not as much. I’m in 6th grade, and I’d probably go to school 4 days a week from 11 to 4 that is still 5 hours of school and 20 hours a week. Homework on the other hand is just plain cruel.Studies show that until up to 9th grade homework doesn’t help. Actually in some cases homework can be worse. Schools say get active an hour a day, and do your home work and read 30 minutes every night, and then they say go have fun. Thats about 5 hours of school based stuff (kinda) and then its time to eat dinner, then you have about 30 minutes to go play if you did all that stuff.

Don’t you think this is a little unfair on the children who actually try to achieve something. Rather than sitting around playing on a games console, children should value an education and not have their parents do their work for them. I have always done all my own work and had minimal help from my parents. I have a friend who’s mother does all his own homework whilst he plays on the xbox. If this attitude spreads the technocentric era will have achieved nothing compared to what our mothers and fathers time had. If you persist to help your child, what will they do when it comes to a time to write exam in HS? Or produce an essay when the standard of work can be differentiated between student and parent. The future I see for my friend is a very bad one, his mother can’t help him when he, if he does, have a career. In the modern world.

If teachers fail to keep us in line with school work, meaning that all our lessons work isn’t completed within that lesson, then shame on them. If they give us piles of homework, then they arent teaching us that work, its up to us to research and learn it. And teachers are getting paid for that????

As a librarian, I see parents doing their kids homework for them every day. Once I had a woman call me up, ask a question, then another and then another. When I asked what she was reading from, she told me she was working on her daughter’s take home exam. She told me her daughter was at cheerleading practice and didn’t have time to take the test herself.
I just hope all these parents are willing to take care of their children into their adult years. McDonalds only has so many jobs to go around.

I am a 13 year old english human being. I am a slightly slower worker and my teachers give us too much homework. I’ve been searching google for a while trying to find some sort of english site where good people can stop homework. My school is gumley house in isleworth, middlesex but I live in kingston, surrey. My school day begins at 840 and ends at 240 on mondays and wednesdays and 310 on tues, thurs & friday. By the time I have gotten home it is 430. I eat then do homework from 530 to 1000 usually. And I still don’t get it done. Then at 10 i go upstairs and have a shower and wash then go to bed at about 11. i wake up at 6. I don’t get to sleep until midnight. at least 2 thirds of my homework is posters and drawing. not much of my homework actually consists of me learning. Please, im begging anyone who is reading this, to help english kids. there are so many reasons. just look at all the comments. I also have depression and my hair falls out a lot because of stress. i also do my homework all day sunday. like i said most of this work in year 8 this year has been posters. my school has a strange learning concept and thinks that drawing will help us. we also had something called integrated learning in y7 which was horrible as well. ever since i started secondary school i have gained bags under my eyes, my hair falling out and depression. right now its my easter holidays and ive been given a science poster(ive lost count of how many science posters i have had to do this year) and R.E project, geography homework, mymaths homework(which has 4 sheets and 2 of them have 5 sheets inside them. i want my holidays to be free and to have fun. oh yeah something i forgot to add before, since starting secondary school i have gained a lot of weight on my legs because i dont move around and do exercise because i dont have time. my ribs stick out because i cant eat because of stress. please help me.

If the teachers would do the job that they are being paid for and stop lacking the responsibility of teaching our children would learn in school. But NO the teachers’ want to get paid more for what they DON’T teach… And as for homework GOD forbid if the child has homework, the parent can help the child and NOT do it for them. This is why the children go to school to learn the responsibility of doing their own work.
Now on the other note the teachers don’t teach responsibility to the students of any type of moral. Yes the parents have responsibility of teaching the child respect, responsibility, courage, honor at home and if they leave it up to the school to do boy they have a rude of wakening, they will be in trouble not only in school, but with the law… Oh wait most of the kids are already in some kind of trouble by the time they are 17.. if not in juvenile hall, they are in prison…

I believe in homework to a certain degree. I am currently a high school junior, so I understand the frustrations and stress homework brings. A small amount of homework, meaning 30 minutes to an hour a night is a reasonable amount. It’s important to have what we learn in class reinforced just so its engraved in our brain. The amount of homework assigned these days is simply TOO MUCH. Most of my life I’ve hated school. I hate school for various reasons, but one of the more primary reasons is homework. “Hate” is a strong word, and it’s not a word I use lightly. In this particular case I find it to be the most appropriate word to describe my feelings, so I assure you “I HATE school”. It’s unfortunate that I hate school because it doesn’t have to be that way. My mother once told me of a time when students LOOKED FORWARD to going to school each morning! I was dumbfounded. What happened? One major factor is homework. I have to do a lot of work each night, sometimes I don’t do it because I’m exhausted. Some teachers understand my exhaustion, others do not. I find it difficult to sleep. I’ve pulled several all-nighters, even in middle school. I know it seems as if I’m complaining, and I might just be, but I find that saying nothing isn’t going to help. And don’t get me wrong, I understand my privilege of education, I try to milk it for all its worth, but I feel as if I have reached the breaking point. I know there are those who have no education, but I believe that it is also true that there are those who have too much. My father once told me about about a college student who commited suicide because he was too overwhelmed with school work…a student TOOK his LIFE because of SCHOOL WORK! Something must be changed. I’ve had two phsycologists due my stress and anxiety regarding school, and I also believed I’m depressed. Please someone help us students.

I have never completed a child’s homework for them but have “helped” to the point of the ridiculous because they were too young to read the instructions or the homework involved subject matter that they had not yet mastered in class. It seems to me that the school system is introducing new material to students during class and then expecting parents to teach the material to their children at home via their homework assignments. I am not referring to 7th to 12th grade students. I am referring to K through 6th grade students. I would expect 7th to 12th graders to have up to 30 min. of homework per night (that’s PER NIGHT not PER CLASS). Many studies by very qualified educators have proven that homework in the lower grades is ENTIRELY counter productive. Extensive testing or assessment is also totally counter productive. It’s time for schools/teachers to QUIT TESTING AND ASSIGNING HOMEWORK and start teaching in school during class – NOT AT HOME. If the subject can’t be taught thoroughly in the classroom then it is time to seriously look at the quality of the teachers we are hiring to teach our children. Children in the lower grades need to come home and play and unwind after 6 or 7 hours in school.

Homework is meant to help reinforce skills needed to take tests, parent’s shouldn’t worry about them getting bad grades on it because if the parent does the work and the kid is always happy they will learn nothing and fail the tests, which will be even worse. Even if tests are done right they will still eventually fail in life from not being able to do anything on their own.
Source: Person at my High School got a 4.0 GPA and was Valedictorian because his mom did all his homework for him and she worked at the school and he would get special permission to take the tests in her office because of a learning problem. He is currently about to fail out in college because he was not prepared for anything.

OMG – Carol I totally agree! Case in point, my 2nd grade daughter brought home pages of Multiplication problems out of nowhere just the other day, expecting her to be able to multiply 12 and 12.. which I had to teach her because she had no clue and had never done before!? It’s not the only time this happened, this went on in 1st grade too, where she was bringing home practically algebra problems and stressing out over because she didn’t understand it. I spent hours upon hours every night teaching and tutoring her. I got so stressed out because I didn’t have a life and was already tired after working all day and then spending all night teaching my kid that I ended up in the pscych ward because my nerves were so shot, I was threatening to shoot myself
We and our kids should not be put through this type of emotional trauma! (see also sooty’s comment above too) They don’t need it, especially in Elementary school. The only time I see it being benificial is a night or two before a test to study, not everyday. And my daughter loves math, loves it, but she is failing it because the way I learned it and the way they are teaching her is not the same as what the school is doing and it’s confusing her.

I agree that homework does suck…especially being a grad student at a college university but I disagree that homework should be taken out completely. Homework is made in order for teachers and professors alike to make sure the students are learning the material they are teaching. I’m not saying that all homework is fair and balanced however my thought process is that all kids have to worry about is going to school, getting their homework done, and enjoying the rest of their day. Adults have to worry about job security, mortgages, bills, etc. so I don’t believe it is asking to much of a child or teen to do some homework.
I know there are some schools/teachers that give copious amount of work but I am in a current situation where a 13 year old cousin of mine has had a WEEK to do 20 notecards and cite the sources (just by writing http://www.yahoo.com, no MLA or APA formatting). I help him find 11 sources the other night and it was due today. He then called me about an hour ago saying he only did one notecard. This is an ongoing process! He seems to not care about homework and has the belief that the teachers are disrespecting him by giving him homework, when the reality is he is just too lazy/not motivated to do his work.
Sorry I don’t mean to rant on a personal situation on this chat but I just believe homework helps to reinforce the material that the children are (hopefully) taught at school before they come home with homework.

I’m a sophomore in high school and I never need the assistance from my parents. My parents never did my homework for me when I was younger (2nd grade-ish), they helped me with it if I was stuck. They then got fed up with me asking for help every night and thus told me to go figure it out myself. To this day I thank them because I’m in the Pre-Diploma Program for IB, taking Precalculus along with AP Human Geography and AP Literature (2 college credit classes and pre-calc is counted as a college class to most people even though there is no credit given) and French 3 with a 3.8 GPA. I now get about four to five hours of homework a night and I surprisingly don’t see a problem with it. It’s all about time management and whether you (the parent) brought up your kid well or not.
I’m also playing varsity baseball for my school…
P.S. The gifted program doesn’t mean anything. I mean it. I wasn’t accepted into the gifted program in elementary school and I’m thankful for that because now the kids who were in gifted are all taking drugs, failing out of school, and fail the FCAT (Florida’s standardized test). I passed the writing with a 6, math with a 5, reading with a 5, and science with a 5 without trying at all and with 40 minutes left for the test (besides writing). So don’t brag about your kid being in the gifted program because I hear my moms friends talk about it all the time and we think the same exact thing, STFU.

homework is the worst idea ever invented. All the pressure of extra work that really isn’t nessessary, it’s ridiculous. And they wonder why so many high school students are struggling and withdrawing themselves from their family, they are feeling the pressure. Homework causes lack of sleep, depression, unhealthy eating habits. Homework builds up so much that trying to stay on top of it all is extremely stressful, what with the assessment tasks they give us too. It’s extremely unfair to kids and teens who just want to enjoy being young, just want to have fun. It makes them wish their schooling years away, make them wish their life away, and before they know it it will be over, so these years should be enjoyable and not stressful. Homework should be unfinished work in class, and nothing but that, not stupid extra work the teachers purposly tell you to do in your free time.

i am in the 10th grade i get homework all thee time i dont think it does any good i never learn anything from it im fine with projects im working on a English 3 project some of my teachers give me homework and never worry about my other teachers giving me homework its a pain and some teachers dont even care about the other homework but i want to get good grade so i end up doing it anyways

I do agree that there is a lot of homework, but it is manageable. I’m in grade 12, and in our agenda it lists how much homework should be assigned per class. Currently my Toronto District School Board agenda states that I should be getting 1 hour and 15 minutes worth of homework per class. I don’t mind doing 5 hours of homework, get home at 4:00pm, do work ’til 9:00pm, then 3 hours of time for myself before I go to bed at 12:00am, but I am 17 and have dropped my weekday badminton, violin, and soccer activities. Being Chinese, my family, and country of origin believes in repetition until perfected. From my experience as a child juggling all the extra curricular activities and going to bed my 9:00pm I don’t see how many kids could do it all.
As you may also know, homework checks are common in elementary school while high school teachers rarely check for homework as they believe it to be the students’ responsibility. I completely agree with this. Homework should be given out as a supplementary source of learning. Students who need the practice should do it voluntarily while those that don’t shouldn’t be penalized. Teachers always make a big fuss because students aren’t listening, or that students haven’t devoted 100% of their attention to the teacher, why don’t teachers just teach the class as best they can regardless if anyone listens?
Just assign the homework, teach the classes, and if students fail then it’s on them. If students fail because they don’t do the homework then it’s the students’ fault. If students or parents come to the teacher for help then it’s the teacher’s responsibility to act.

To all those who hate homework, live with it. It is, and always will be a part of life. And i’m sure all you guys who complain about homework are still getting it done? So whats there to complain if your weekends are full and you can’t sleep, cancel your plans for naps! That’s why they gave em to us in Kindergarten. Planning for life is what kindergarten did for us, tought me many things. So suck it up and be mature.

Thanks for the “just suck it up” argument. You may as well have told us, I hated learning too but I did it anyway. If it was good enough for me, it was good enough for you.
We actually live in a very anti-intellectual time. The pro-homework argument, when you scratch deep enough, isn’t about learning, growing, reaching, expanding one’s mind. So much of it, I found, was about putting creative children in their place. I hated it, so you should too.
I often wonder if the most vehement defenders of reading logs actually didn’t like reading when they were children. Only a person with an aversion to reading could have dreamed up that dreaded twenty minute rule. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when at a local CHADD event, the leader chirped that we should take out timers. She showed a grinning boy who had just gotten through his required twenty minute obligation.

i think homework should band from school so that kids have more free time we have enough time to learn in the eight hours of school we already have so dont be dumb just dont give homework make a kid happy for once dont ruin their social lives by giving them too much homework!
