New Survey: 43 Percent of Parents Have Done Their Kids’ Homework

In a survey conducted by AskKids and released in late August, 43 percent of parents admitted to having done their kids’ homework. According to the Los Angeles Times, here’s what the survey found:

Forty-three percent of parents queried in a survey this month admit to doing their children’s homework at least once to ease the strain. Almost half the dads, 47%, owned up to doing the homework, while 39% of mothers did so.

Kids who hope to persuade (con?) parents into doing homework have a better shot if mom and dad are older. Of parents 18-24, 33% say they’ve done their children’s homework for them, compared with 45% of 25- to 44-year-old parents.

The survey of 778 parents, conducted for the homework resource website Ask Kids, showed that 84% of parents help with homework — more with math and English than with other subjects.

The survey was conducted by Kelton Research using an e-mail invitation and an online survey. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

If parents stopped helping their kids with homework (or doing it for them), teachers would have to stop giving it, or, at the very least, cut back on the amount. It’s a rare elementary school child who can manage homework without a lot of parental involvement and help. Just imagine what would happen if parents got together and stopped asking their children whether they had homework, stopped helping them do it, and stopped making sure that the homework made its way back to school. A little homework disobedience anyone?

  3. I actually just googled this just now after doing some of my kids homework for him,,,,and was wondering how many others out there do this or if Im the only one since no one ever admits it. My son has one of those older mean teacher that everyone gets at least once in life this year. She is a homework tyrant. He needs some time to study things like multiplication facts and if he was forced to do all the homework she gives there would be no time. The homework is not beneficial to him, in fact its the opposite….just causes him to shut down. So YES I am among those who do their kids homework (not all of it, but the excess)….not ashamed….Im just trying to make the best of the florida public school system…..the next step is home schooling & were definitly not ruling it out….we could make much better use of our time during the day actually learning instead of his teacher pushing all the real work off on after school 9which should be at least partly playtime AND family time.

  6. I hate homework that you have to have parents for. Like my Health homework, which I still need to do. Every single piece of homework has to have a parent signature at the bottom. If it doesn’t, then it is marked as missing. If you do it at baseball practice, you have missing homework. If you do it at night, you have missing homework. If you do it on the bus, you have missing homework. A lot of people I know have stayed up till midnight to do homework. Not just the kids who have a hard time with it. Everyone. And homework where you need to interview an adult is just mean. It takes forever because you need a time when you have a parent, and neither you or your parent has important things to do.

  7. they shouldn’t give work where you have to do your homework a way that everyone knows takes longer, when you already know how to do it 20 times easier. and then you have to explain what you did and why you did it… I can’t even ask my parents for help because they don’t know what half the stuff is, and even when they do know, they only know how to do it a different way. can’t i just say 4×4-2=16 and be done with it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  10. yeah, I go to magnet school (I’m 7th grader), and we get homework, but what works better is we do a lot of it in CLASS. Sure, we might have projects and power points but mostly if we don’t finish something in class we just do it at home. My friends from other middle school meets me after school and shows me how much he has and its crazy.Math is sorta okay ’cause you need practice out of class, but I think we should have homework, but come on, not to much.

  14. You lot are all fantastic whiners.

Here’s my story: I’m currently a junior in high school and I am juggling ten classes (seven of which are AP), two clubs, and an instrument. I don’t depend on my parents because they couldn’t help me with homework even if they tried. I’m pulling off straight As and yet I manage to have a social life. I attribute everything to my bullheaded perseverance and hard work.

To parents: you all must either be the type of overbearing parent who “helps” your children with classwork so they “succeed” or the type of “hands-off” parent who complains that school is “too hard” for your “poor kids.” First of all, may I remind you that your children are their own entities and it is an insult to them for you to say they are incompetent? Secondly, of course homework is important. Do you expect all of your children’s learning to be completed within the six or so hours they spend at school, five days a school week? Obviously homework is necessary to supplement and reinforce material introduced in class. I guarantee that doing homework will increase comprehension and make further assignments easier. Lastly, it is your duty as parents to act as support for your children. Do you honestly believe writing their homework for them is beneficial to them, whether or not you are trying to make a point to the teacher? Homework should be considered a privilege granted to your children to help them, not a chore.

To fellow students: if you can’t handle the classes and the homework they entail, either drop a class or ask for help from teachers or parents. Be proactive. Don’t complain and emo around about what you think you cannot do, because that is the lifestyle of a complete waste of existence. Don’t complain that there is no one you can ask for help from either. You’re just not looking. Think about the great opportunities you have to learn and improve yourselves that millions of other people do not have and will never have. Don’t get stuck despairing on the hopelessness of school life, because it is not so. Education is your ticket to the rest of your life and it’s worth it no matter how excruciating the cost seems at the moment. Humanity is possibility. Man can do all things if he will.

  22. Homework in Elementary and Middle School was a piece of cake, I could get all my work done in an hour everyday before or after school, and I was an honors, high-ranking student.
    It’s not like that anymore!
I’m a sophomore in HS in some of the most rigorous classes in the world (IB) along with AP, and the home-work load is ridiculous. 3 hours is an easy day, 5 to 6 hours a night is typical. What drives me crazy is how much time teachers waste in class. Our teachers give us extra work as if it’s nothing, and half of it is “required” but doesn’t actually count for a grade! If I skipped my classes everyday and only focused on homework, I’d be a straight-A student.
I can no longer do sports or after-school activities, I’ve given up ALL of my hobbies, and I currently have a disgusting grade point average. I’m extremely sleep-deprived (often nights I do the or more hours of homework than I get sleep), on weeknights I sleep around 4 to 6 hours, 7 if I’m lucky. Being a teenager, I’m supposed to be getting 9 or 10 hours of sleep each night. I’m constantly stressed and when I accidentally fall asleep on a school night and don’t finish all my work I wake up in the morning very anxious. This has caused me to develop depression (was moderate, then became severe) and anxiety issues. I hang out with my friends about two times a year, that’s all. Most of the time I’m so tired while doing my work that it’s “bad quality” and so I get low grades on assignments and now my GPA is so low that I’m afraid I won’t get accepted into college…
argh! There really needs to be a law restricting the amount of homework given to public school students and the school day needs to start at a later time during the day. I get up at 5 and walk to my bus stop in the dark.
I can’t even take a shower or walk my dog everyday because of how tired I am and how much work I have.
Teachers complain that they have as much work as us because they have to grade all of our papers…at least they have a planning period! And grading a paper shouldn’t take nearly as long as actually writing it.
I know some students that graduated from the program I’m in and they came back saying college is extraordinarily easy compared to high school. I’m thinking about switching out of my program, taking classes that involve less work and stress, going to a community college and then transferring to a university.
School sucks, it really does. I used to love learning and now I HATE IT.

  23. Dear Sasha,
Transferring out of your program into something more manageable sounds like a very good idea. And that doesn’t mean you’ll have to go to a community college if you don’t want to. Maybe you won’t get into an Ivy League if you’re in a different program but, who knows, maybe you’ll get into whatever college you want, including an Ivy League. If you have more time for yourself, more time for sleep, more time to socialize, more time to read, and more time to pursue your own passions, you will be a fine candidate for any college.

    Good luck!

  29. Finally, a website that understands what we kids have been talking about for years. I can’t tell you how many hours I have spent doing posters and diorama projects for some teacher who was convinced that this would teach us creativity. Explain to me what is creative about doing the same exact project as 80 other kids while following guidelines set by someone else.

Perhaps the worst was one project I was forced to do at home in 7th grade. I spent hours making a collage that could not have any words on it, only pictures. Know what class this was for? English. That’s right. We were not allowed to write on a project for English class. Whoever decided that homework and projects like this actually teaches students anything is insane. It does nothing. If you don’t believe my story, take a look on the Boston Globe website and read the article “Why Have Homework? Beneath a Pillar of Our Education System Lies a Troubling Uncertainty.”

  31. Teachers always say how they will only give 20 minutes of homework and how that won’t be very much. But they aren’t the only teachers giving homework. I have about 7 subjects at school that regularly give homework and if I’ve done my math right that equals about 2 hours and 20 minutes homework each night. That might not sound like much but we also have about 4 assignments going on at the same time and we also have to go to sport games and sport trainings. Some nights i get home at 6 o’clock and they expect us to do all that homework while also eating bathing and making sure we get a good nights sleep ready to learn more things tomorrow. Well all the homework I do seems to be completley pointless and doesn’t help me AT ALL. In fact it just seems that homework has made me stay up far too late at night and been angry in the morning and has gotten me in trouble at school. END THE MADNESS! STOP THE HOMEWORK

And one more arguement from me, it’s not fair how teachers are allowed to walk into a classroom and say “sorry i can’t hand your exams back because i had other students to mark” WELL GUESS WHAT!!?? WE HAVE OTHER TEACHERS HOMEWORK TO DO! But if we walk into a class with that excuse we get a detention and a letter home. ITS NOT FAIR

I do it all on the first night then I ask my parents to give me more problems and I don’t watch TV or play video games or have any fun at all!” Well guess what, I bet that when your 21 years old we will all laugh at you becuase you still live at home having never kept strong relationships with friends and having never even spoken to a girl. Seriously if your saying that homework is fun GET A LIFE YOUR GOING TO DIE ALONE UNLESS YOU START GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE AND STOP DOING HOMEWORK
